what is the function of this

I have the timing chain exposed on my 302.  this piece was on the front where the eccentric would mount. what is this for?  it doesn't seem to have a function.  Reminds me of an oil slinger

Re: what is the function of this

Well they didn't include very many 'spare parts' from the factory.  Give the make, model, year and I bet you can find a diagram.

Re: what is the function of this

It looks like a fishing line sinker.      Seriously,  some kind of retainer washer.  Maybe it had a secondary design to absorb some camshaft harmonics?    Doesnt matter.  You no longer need it.    I suspect you might have to change out your timing set.  You may have some clearance problems with the fuel eccentric on the cam gear to the timing cover.

If multiple things can go wrong, the one that will go wrong will be the one that causes the most damage.

Re: what is the function of this

t,
FWIW and, for grins a giggles, i did some research and this is what I found.
There's a company called, Enginequest which sells various engine rebuild parts.
According to their catalog, they are calling that a fuel pump eccentric for '85 and up SBF....part #CE121N
You can check out their website at engine quest.com

Not sure if this helps answer your question but either way, I hope you have a "sense of adventure" today.....!!!!

Re: what is the function of this

i think they used that in place of the actual eccentric in later cars that had electric fuel pumps. it provides balance weight for the timing chain.

Good, fast or cheap. Pick any two...

Re: what is the function of this

Comp cams sells a part like that in their “camshaft finishing kit” and calls it a camshaft eccentric. It mounts to the end of the camshaft just like the Ford eccentric does.  Is it their version of a fuel pump eccentric? Beats me.

I ordered a comp cam finishing kit, it will be here later today.  I didn't see a part like that listed.

I kind of thought it looked like it could be used to drive the fuel pump but it is pretty light weight!

Josh thanks for your research efforts!!

Re: what is the function of this

It IS an oil slinger to lube the timing chain.

BTW, your timing sprocket looks like a two piece eccentric would work fine on it.

Re: what is the function of this

Re: what is the function of this

If the pin that goes on the front of the camshaft is too short(like mine was)......I cut the head off a grade 8 bolt to "engineer" one long enough to go thru the cam gear AND eccentric. I've had NO problems.
