Eccentric Fuel Pump Curiosity

Some recent forum discussions on fuel pump eccentrics brought up an question I’ve had … what is the difference between the 1-piece and 2-piece eccentric mechanical fuel pump drive that Ford changed in the late-sixties, early-seventies for the SB Ford engine? And, why did Ford make this change?

Re: Eccentric Fuel Pump Curiosity

The two piece eccentric helps reduce friction.  If you ever look at a one piece eccentric that has a lot of miles on it, some are starting to gaul where the pump lever interfaces.  The two piece setup allows an oil film around the perimeter between the two pieces.  As the outer part hits the fuel pump, it does not have to slide against the pump lever.  It can rotate on that film of oil between it and the inner piece while it simply pushes on that lever.

It is important to note the two piece eccentric must use the sprocket with the raised boss on it so the outer ring can rotate freely on the inner ring.  And the tab on the inner eccentric fits into the hole on the sprocket, rather than the cam dowel sticking through the sprocket into the eccentric like the one piece setup does.

Re: Eccentric Fuel Pump Curiosity

Besides what MS said, here's a link to my GT40P thread. Read post #11. I cover differences between the two styles and timing chain sets. A lot of times people mix up the compatibility of parts then blame the timing chain cover saying you can't use a 60's cover on a double roller chain with them. I am with no issues.
