Re: Finally bit the bullet on the 66 rear end

If it's not okay to install the wheels with spacers, will "washers" do?

Re: Finally bit the bullet on the 66 rear end

Oh man I'm so confused.  I have a 66 and have done a ton of research on wheels.  I thought i had come to the conclusion that 17 X 8 V45s from Vintage Wheel Works would work with 4.75" backspacing.  The only 17 x 7 they make in that wheel is a two piece that is $400.  I've read many threads from others who have made 17 x 8 with 4.75BS work, but this thread makes it sound like I'm wrong?  I don't mind rolling the fender lips if necessary, as its going to be painted soon anyway.

Also looked at Torque Thrust II's, but ran into the 2 piece super expensive problem again.  Their 4.75" backspace is $350, and their one piece thats $182 has a 4.81" backspace.

Re: Finally bit the bullet on the 66 rear end

I ordered two of the two piece wheels that you can specify the back space with a 5 inch BS. The center section stuck out about 1/2 inch.

Re: Finally bit the bullet on the 66 rear end

Draw it out on a piece of paper with the rear axle, any spacer and the wheels represented to make it easier to see what the end result will be.

Or on the front, with the spindles.

Re: Finally bit the bullet on the 66 rear end

Hi Steve-
I’m finally measuring to order my wheels and this is what I came up with on the back. If I set the back space at 5.25” (standard width 65 rear measuring from the mounting surface of the rotor)  that leaves me with apx 7/8” of clearance between the leaf spring and where the edge of the rim would be. How much room do you need for tire bulge?  That doesn’t seem like enough room.

Thanks!

Re: Finally bit the bullet on the 66 rear end

17" tires do not have near as much bulge as 14 or 15".
I was going to show a picture, but tinypics is down.

Also note my dimensions do not include rotor thickness.  They are taken off the axle flanges.  Email me and I will send a sketch of the dimensions on my car.

Re: Finally bit the bullet on the 66 rear end

Well, I made a home made BS gauge like the one shown in this video (worked pretty well)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=tHbeWf_a3wU

and when I set the backspace up to be 4.5” assuming diameter of a 235/45/17 tire, at full lock left or right, the very edge hit the lip on the inside frame rail. I’ve got a TCP manual rack, not sure if that allows more turning radius than stock?  So, I guess my options are drop to the BS to 4.25 or 4 or grind down the lip of the frame rail?

Re: Finally bit the bullet on the 66 rear end

I'm assuming an 8" rim? 65-66 a 7" is less problematic on the front.

Re: Finally bit the bullet on the 66 rear end

Well, you can ignore my last post. I set everything up again and double checked all of my measurements and 4.5” BS will work just fine.
