Let's talk car security

I'd like to start a thread on how to keep our cars from getting stolen.  Aside from alarms, what do you folks use?  Battery cutouts, ignition cutouts, fuel line shutoffs, lojack?

Re: Let's talk car security

Unfortunately non of those methods you mentioned will prevent a thief from dragging it up on a roll back. LoJack might make it possible to track what ever part it was attached to but most of these dirt bags aren't stealing it to resell the car in drivable condition, they're after parts. Engines, transmissions, wheels and tires and in the case of classics, body parts. By the time you found it it would be a shell. I found out with my Harley that besides chaining it to a pole a very loud, and I mean VERY loud, motion sensitive alarm was pretty effective.

I suspect that if anyone has a technique they think really works, they may be reluctant to post it in a public forum.

Re: Let's talk car security

A determined thief can take your car no matter what.  a flatbed with a good wench can pull it up even if the tires are locked tight.

Re: Let's talk car security

as a general rule mine is never left in a place that someone could steal it.  Short of someone breaking in to my garage and taking it!!  It's probably best they don't try that whilst I'm home!

If I had a good wench .... I'd leave her to watch the car.

Re: Let's talk car security

I firmly believe that wheel locks, alarms or other gizmos to deter theft are a total waste of time and money.  I use a CLUB when parked, but I know it probably won’t deter a real thief.

The pros are going to back up to your car with a wrecker or flatbed and winch it up and be gone in about thirty seconds, ala OVERHAULIN.

Be sure your insurance policy is in effect and covers you for an adequate amount for theft.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.
