On my '68, with the door open I can set the door lock then close the door while holding the outside handle button in. This will allow the lock to remain locked with the closed door. However, if I close the door without holding in the handle button, the lock will pop back up. I know the '67 doors also work this way. My question is are you required to use the key to lock the '65s and '66s or can you also lock these doors without the key?

You cannot lock the doors of a '65/'66 from outside the car without a key.

Key or ...reach through window and lock it.😁
Same is true for passenger side.
Lock one from inside and key on last door.
I can say I have locked my keys in the trunk.😂😂😂

That's interesting. I guess Ford changed more than just the lock cylinders in '67 when they went to the double sided keys.

Unless you have added power locks.

I was thinking that as well. A universal power lock kit like this one would be interesting to think about:

That's pretty reasonable but for real easy installation you might consider boneyarding a couple of door lock motors from a late Fox or a late 80's TC or CV. I welded a 1/4x20 nut to the rear window channel and attached the Ford motors to the side of the channel. Then a simple connection to the lock rod. Works great and very easy. Also, you have Ford lock motors which can be more easily replaced if necessary.
Just sayin'
