Is it just me or is drilling 17 holes in good paint a bit nauseating?

So started my 62 Galaxie 20 years ago.  At the time I had no skills other than a natural mechanical aptitude and learned as I went.  Here is the series of events that put me where I was today:

1.  The car was missing about 1/2 of its side molding and eBay was not a good a source for that kind of thing yet.  Also there was not enough population in my area to find it at a junk yard or swapmeet, so I deleted said trim.
2.  I filled in the holes on the P-side with bondo 😭
3.  When I got to the drivers side I had purchased my first welder and "welded" the holes up (quality of the welds was poor as they drilled out fairly easily today.
4.  painted the car myself, was good for a first paint job but could have been way better.
5.  6 months before the MT bash in 2011 I took the car in to be painted by a "professional" we discussed the bondoed holes he recommended popping out the bondo and leading the holes.
6.  Paint came out OKAY, better than mine in some respects worse in others.
7.  About 4 years ago the leaded holes started to bubble through the paint so I started watching eBay for the 18 (not a typo 18!!) pieces of trim to put on the car. Each section of trim is a 4" wide aluminum strip that the inner 3.5" is painted to match the top of the car and then a raised 1" wide strip of stainless goes down the center.
9.  Took about a year to find all the trim and then time to strip the old paint off and paint them to match my Galaxie's top.
10.  Today was the day to start the install process.  On the the P-side there were 17 lead plugs to pop out not to hard to find (over half had bubbled) but on the D-side there were 17 holes to DRILL.  I ran a piece of tape along the side of the car and started measuring and marking.  I then drilled pilot holes and then enlarged them to the correct size.  It was quite nerve racking to get the holes drilled but they are in and match the other side.  Now I just need to install the trim.... all 18 pieces of it!!

Good work, Day.  As usual.  I understand about going to a "professional" painter.  Saw the result of my friend's very expensive paint job back in '63.  He paid $175 for a lacquer job on his Model A.  Six months later the paint was falling off.  I decided that for that kind of ridiculous money I could buy the equipment and learn to do it myself and have done 12, not all for me, since then...and been pretty happy with the outcome.

You are a brave man. Drilling that many holes in nice paint would give me pause.

I would have permanently paused before the first one!

Re: Is it just me or is drilling 17 holes in good paint a bit nauseating?

Turns out several hours of measuring and summoning up the courage to drill the holes and then actually drilling said holes was the EASY part.  I had to disassemble half the car to get to the back side of the panels to install most of the nuts. If it had not been for my daughters skinny arms the hood and hood hinges would have needed to come off to get to one nut on each fender.  Entire front grill assembly had to come apart, and all fore doors had to be taken apart.  Took me the better part of two days.  My wife and daughter suggested I leave off the black strip trim that goes under the stainless pieces.  After doing a mockup turned out that it looked way better with just the single stripe.  With the black stripe it was a little garish.  I am very happy with the result.

Makes sense, they are very similar cars. Other than trim 61 and 62 are identical from the windshield forward. Windshield is 1” taller on the 61. Door shape is the same but the skins are different. Back half of the car is totally different. 61 back half is basically a 63 back half with fins. 62 is nothing like the 61 or 63 and it’s own thing.

Thanks!!  It’s a little less of a barge with the r&p steering and the inhanced suspension but still a boat 😀😀

Nice looking car.  It's great to see somebody restore something different/

Thanks!  The old gal is the red headed stepchild of Galaxies but I like it. I have a 351 that needs to get put in it but the driving season is so short in MT that I need to just enjoy it with the 302 and wait until the weather changes to do the upgrade.

Looks good!

The Galaxies were considered Fords flagship line and as such they changed the design every year.  Even 1965 and 1966 Galaxie body lines are different.
