Here’s a thought provoker worth millions

When you buy your Mustang parts on ebay, you get charged sales tax.  The tax is calculated on the cost of the goods PLUS the cost of the shipping charges.  When the seller ships the item, they do not pay sales tax on the shipping!

What do you think ebay is doing with all that tax revenue they charge for shipping fees, that are never actually paid as sales tax?

Am I missing something?  Or, onto a huge class action suit?

Interesting, I just looked at my UPS receipt from dropping a box off at the store and for sure they did not charge sales tax. I wonder if eBay is charging tax because they are re-selling shipping?

Re: Here’s a thought provoker worth millions

The last few things I bought on e-bay I was charged tax on shipping. I stopped looking there for a lot of things for this reason. Some times that is the only place to find good used stuff.

If this forum can't fix it, it isn't broke.

I think it sucks that they charge a commission to the Seller for the full price when you include shipping in the price.  They should use there shipping estimate and take that off there commission.  Im not sure why I waist my time still selling on there anymore.

The greedy "children of unwed parents" also charge the seller a fee % based on the tax they collect.  In other words if I sell something for $80.00 + $10.00 Shipping + $10.00 Tax I pay 13.5% on $100 total of all three.  Also with there new set up where they no longer take PayPal and deduct the selling fees directly from the purchase fees they are saving on all the CC fees they were being charged when sellers payed their selling fees with a CC.

Re: Here’s a thought provoker worth millions

Yup, I got hosed selling something on EBay recently. I hadn't sold anything on EBay in a few years. I listed the item like I always did and then they held my money for more than a week after the sale and charged me almost 14% in fees.  None of that was disclosed when I listed the item: if it was, I wouldn't have sold it on EBay.

I also noted the sales tax on the shipping. That pissed me off too.  I also had the same thought about a class action.

I will never sell anything on EBay again and sent them a nasty gram letting them know how displeased I was and that I was done using eBay. Of course, I got no response.

Re: Here’s a thought provoker worth millions

Yep, they charged tax on my shipping.  If they don't send this tax money to the states, then where does it go?  Are they just keeping it?

Re: Here’s a thought provoker worth millions

If they don't send the tax revenue to the appropriate parties they will get in very big trouble.  Not only are they not paying tax they owe, but they are also committing fraud by claiming funds are being collected for taxes they are not paying.

Kind of academic when buying stuff for me as I live in Delaware...

Why not write a letter to the Texas Comptroller and ask about it?  I wrote to them years ago about another issue when I was still in Texas and got a prompt reply explaining the situation.

They have a contact page at https://comptroller.texas.gov/about/contact/
