Dilemma to paint the stripes or go decal?

I’m building a car that will be driven and driven hard.  I’m not building a show car all though I will attend shows.  I’m to the point of applying stripes to the project.  I’ve been dead set on painting them.  My good friend and life long body man is suggesting decals for the stripes.   He’s reasoning is one it’s a driver built and two he said I’ll need to spray at minimum three coats so the red doesn’t bled through the white stripes.  He said I would need to paint the stripes and spray two coats of clear and then said again and spray two more coats of clear to get the stripes to be buried in the clear.  Plus the white stripe is a metallic looking stripe.  The wife has the exact decal on her bronco.   Not sure if I can get that white color in a single base mixer.  It might have to be in a three stage to get the same look.  But I don’t know this for sure yet.  I need to take her bronco to the paint store so they can scan the stripe.

I think I’ve answered my own question but what’s everyone else’s thought?   I’m leaning towards the decal.  Touch up paint work would be easier and I could always change out the decals for either fresher looking ones or even change the color.

Re: Dilemma to paint the stripes or go decal?

I would opt for the decal.  These days, I think they call it a 'graphics, or 'vinyl wrap'.  Also, I think they can be easily removed if you want to change it.  And it is available on Amazon if you want to do it yourself.

I’m strongly leaning that way.  I was able to talk to my son this morning and he’s ok with the graphic decal.  He’s currently in his MSG(job) training for the marines.

Re: Dilemma to paint the stripes or go decal?

I really don't have a lot of experience doing stripes but I tend to agree with the notion of decals.
What I really want to add, Bob, is that you must be getting close and you need to make sure you are ready do drive that car to next year's Bash in Bako, CA.  What a totally cool shake-down run that would be.  Hope it happens. I bet you could meet up with some of the Texas gang so's you wouldn't be crusin' alone.

Re: Dilemma to paint the stripes or go decal?

Welp (thx RPM)......I did the vinyl tape(not decal butt-close) years ago and experienced some sort-uva mold discoloration about 6 months after applying. The vendor made it good and removed and reapplied tape. lasted about 6 months and same thang!! ( I removed the tape and man was that a job !!!!)
This time I had the stripes/ghost stripes painted on and am mucho happier.
Prolly was poor quality tape was the issue butt........thought it was worth mentioning.

My good friend knows of a high end shop and is working with them on getting a quote to stripe the mustang.   I mentioned to him the issue you had and he’s reassured me this won’t be an issue.  Time will tell.

Highly unlikely I’ll be able to make the drive to CA but I’m hoping we can fly out.   I have to wait and see how things unfold with where our son gets deployed to.   It will be overseas for two years and if it’s a country safe to visit we want to plan our time off to go see him.

Re: Dilemma to paint the stripes or go decal?

Talking side stripes?
Decal, no.
Painted, no.
Vinyl stripe like original is the way to go.  And be sure they are one long straight line.
Why?  They get chipped down there and vinyl stripes are easily replaced.

Center stripes?  Painted.
Pay attention to Shelby’s taper dimensions (see Branda catalog)

Both stripes will be applied.  I plan on following the tapered measurements of the Shelby stripes.  I was just discussing this last night with my buddy on wether or not I adjust the ending taper on the roof to be a little wider than it would be on a fastback.  Then pick up that ending width on the rear trunk.   Not sure it’s worth that effort or not.

We also talked about stone chips which the front apron will see plenty of as I plan on driving this thing as much as I can.  I know it’s not the norm to build something like this and think of how I’ll repair it but it’s nice knowing some of the potential paint work could be easier to redo.

The number on the side doesn’t look to bad.
