ideas on security/alarms for a classic car

Hey Guys/Gals.... Before I start putting the wiring harness back in the car after the recent paint....I was thinking about some kind of GPS tracker and or alarm to go on the car. I will add some extra power and ground wires to both ends of the harnesses for that purpose. Here's my thinking. The car is gonna be a daily driver in a college town. Afraid to even think about trying to put full coverage on it. Its not  a Barret Jackson collectable by any means, was originally a 6 cylinder car that has a few mods done to it. I know if a pro wants it, he'll just back up to it w a flatbed and take it. Not much you can do about that. But, with a gps tracker, if that happens, you'll have a good chance of getting a location to give the cops. Also, there are alarms that will txt you if the car is disturbed or moved...I also plan to put some kind of ignition kill circuit to make it not so easy for a joyrider to drive it away. I figure a gps monthly service fee and alarm is still gonna be cheaper than 18 year old putting full coverage on it...if I could find a company to insure an 18 year old daily driver. Would like you guys thoughts on this.

Re: ideas on security/alarms for a classic car

25 yrs ago, I had the same thought about gps inside the car.  This was before cell phones!!  I'm not much of a tech guy, but I dont undestand why we dont have a product out there that can work with our smart phones??  If there was a tracking device we can program to our phone whenever our phone sends a signal to the device.  I believe this would be huge!  Im sure law enforcement would be totally against it, because of lots of reasons, ie; false thefts, jokes, false readings, safety etc...  I understand, but we as owners should have the choice to locate our cars.  We all know auto theft is not a police depts. priority, so we should be able to try to find our vehicles.
Something you may want to try, if you know any good use car dealer, maybe they can put a tracker on your car for a small fee? Just a thought.  They use this technology to find cars for repo.

Re: ideas on security/alarms for a classic car

There are some that work with them...been doing some research...DroneMobile is one, and they are relatively cheap. Lojack:$700 one time fee, 90% recovery rate and they make them for classics...but not available in my area.

Re: ideas on security/alarms for a classic car

The $ 700 lo-jack only activates when you report it.  The car could be gone for hours before you discover it gone.  They sell a $1000 version that automatically checks its location for a key chain signal every 30 min.  If the car is not near the transmitter lo- jack will signal police w/out you doing anything.  Just an  FYI.

Re: ideas on security/alarms for a classic car

GPS I think is a good idea. I think I seen one that will text you if the vehicle leaves a certain area. If you could make the area small, like 1 or 2 hundred yard circle I think that would work. You wouldn't want anything too sensitive, if you get to many text alerts, a person will tend to ignore them. It would be nice if they made them where you could add a door or hood switch that would also send a text.
Another thing that would be nice is if it had it’s own internal battery that charged off the car battery. A thief won’t take the time to search the car for a hidden tracking device; they want to get out in a hurry. They may take the time to cut the battery cable to shut down any hidden devices.  If they cut the battery the GPS would still work.

If this forum can't fix it, it isn't broke.

Re: ideas on security/alarms for a classic car

Cool topic!
We all know...if some @$$ wipe wants it bad enough.....they WILL get it. The trick is to slow them down enough to make them get scared of being caught and they take off.
I put my battery in the trunk(so that's locked up) and hide most all the wiring under the hood(looks clean and is hard to trace what wire to what component). I also have the little battery cut-off switch with a "unique" key to sorta slow'em down.
Friend of mine had an electric fuel pump with a hidden switch. The idea was to let the crook hot wire it....and the car would run until the fuel in the carb bowl was used up. THEN....they would be on the road somewhere and the engine dies.....the crook would panic and leave the car on side of road somewhere.
Sure....pretty primitive butt......most crooks are lazy and cowards so any thing to slow down their theft attempt and most of the scum will slither off to an "easier" victim.
Please re-read top two sentences.

http://www.mobilistics.com/transponder.html

I thought about how hard it would be to adapt a factory transponder into an old car.  the early transponders, the key DIDNT have to be in the ignition, it just had to be near.  It was put in the key as the simplest solution.   Further, it doesnt have to even be a key, just the chip  transponder the module recognizes.

Then I found this........simple, could be easily defeated.  But as stated earlier, the goal is to slow em down!

If multiple things can go wrong, the one that will go wrong will be the one that causes the most damage.

Re: ideas on security/alarms for a classic car

I had a pickup truck that got stolen a few times. I rednecked my own kill switch that was no hassle for me, but gave me good peace of mind. It involved a few relays and a door bell switch under the carpet.

To start the truck, I would press the doorbell switch right next to the high beam switch on the floor, then turn the key while holding the switch. If you did not press the switch it would honk the horn when you turned the key.

Juvinile, yes, but hey it was easy and cheap.

It sounds like you have a few upgrades, so you can play with disabling any of the three major components for starting the car: Fuel, Spark, Starter. Have fun with it.

As a side note, my brother installs LoJack and they have their own battery that lasts about 5 years. It is the size of a deck of cards.

Re: ideas on security/alarms for a classic car

Or, you could just buy this sticker:

Seriously, what Ozblitz and wsinsle have in mind is of course already available, just search for "vehicle tracking" on Ebay...

Re: ideas on security/alarms for a classic car

It's hard to hot wire a car when there are no exposed wires under the hood!
I'll bet even an expirienced perp could not even locate my ignition coil.
Hide everything!

Re: ideas on security/alarms for a classic car

hiding ignition coil i like that one. The doorbell iswitch idea pretty good too. Buddy of mine said he just sold a car he flipped that the prev owner had wired in a relay that worked off the hi-beam switch on the column...not pulled in...no start. I already have a plan to run the wiring inside the fenderwells and have minimum wiring showing using grey flex electrical conduit. Checked on Lojack online, but can't get it in this Zapcode...maybe Florida either for that matter! I was really leaning that way too.

Re: ideas on security/alarms for a classic car

Aren't we talking about Fords?  My biggest fear is a screwdriver and a solenoid!  I mean thats it, thats all it takes. Besides getting inside the car.  The electric fuel route sounds the best to me as far as switches go.  But I would breathe easier with a tracking device and knowing exactly where my car is

Re: ideas on security/alarms for a classic car

I wonder if you can get a APP for your phone that tracks a GPS on your car?

Re: ideas on security/alarms for a classic car

A friend of mine installed a GPS tracker in his aging mother's car.  She has gotten a little forgetful and has been lost on more than one occasion.  He gets a txt on his phone every time the car moves.  Plugs in OBDII port, so not applicable to old cars, but maybe they"ve got another solution.  I'll inquire who the provider is.

Here's the link to the GPS tracker I've seen, and know the service works well in our area.  They have this 3 wire unit for discreet install, or non-obdii vehicles.
