Electrical gremlins - Turn signal and brake lights

I am an infrequent poster but recognize the knowledge base on this board.
My electrical issue centers around turn signals and brake lights - here's the back story. Car is a 66 fastback, R-model clone. Wiring is Ron Francis as I have no power anything in this car. Put a new turn signal cam canceller switch in (the one with only two red wires off it). At first, no turns or brake lights. Discovered a blown turn signal fuse, now freplaced. Now,  I have a left turn signal up front with dash indicator and right rear but no front right turn indicator and no dash indicator.. Still no brake lights. I might add that I did have an issue with the brake pedal rod and switch but that all went back together the way it should. Those of you not intimidated by electricy, I'd love some thoughts. Thanks in advance.
Frank

Re: Electrical gremlins - Turn signal and brake lights

I replaced my rear housing and two new pig tails (wire plugs into housing) left pig tail pushed all contacts into housing together and shorted out , right pig tail was open running light wire to brake light only working,, both pig tails were "Scott Drake"   Drove me crazy and was tearing  steering colum apart to replace all turn signal wiring. Mr tim came to the rescue and in 5 minutes found the bad pig tails.  Being NEW I didn't check them.   Just a FYI with "NEW" parts.

Re: Electrical gremlins - Turn signal and brake lights

Based on the fact that the left side is working, indicating power is being supplied to the turn signal switch, I'd check the connections in the switch, and the wiring supplied w/the replacement switch.
Also, there is a 6-pin electrical connector at the base of the steering column.  Some contacts may not be making good connection.  There is also a two-pin connector that goes to the rear turn signal/brake lights.

6-Pin connector wiring:
Green – from brake switch
White-Blue – to right side front turn signal
Green-White - to left side front turn signal
Yellow - +12v power to horn button
Blue-Yellow – from horn button to horn
Blue – from turn signal flasher

2-Pin Connector wiring:
Orange-Blue – to right rear turn signal/brake light
Green-Orange - to left rear turn signal/brake light

65 Fastback, 351W, 5-speed, 4 wheel discs, 9" rear,  R&C Front End.

Re: Electrical gremlins - Turn signal and brake lights

First verify you have the right bulbs in, this may sound silly bub it happens. They should be doubble filament, not sure of the number but someone should know. Now I know nothing about Ron Francis wiring but troubshooting will be a lot easier if wiring colors are the same as BobE has listed. As bob stated there are two connectors on the base of the steering wheel and that's where theses checks will be made.
You will need a jumper with some kind of pin or paper clip, to make a few check of the cars wiring. I prefer to use one with an in line fuse for safety. Find a +12 volt source and jumper to each of the following wires on the female plug: (keep in mind colors listed are original Ford wiring colors)

2 pin female connector:    Orange-blue should light the right rear light.
                                               Green-orange left rear
6 pin female connector:     White-blue right front and dash indicator
Green-white left front and dash indicator

Now check the brake circuit, brakes use a different voltage sorce that the turn signals. On the 6 pin female connector, check for voltage at the green wire. You should have voltage there with the brake pedal depressed. If not brake switch is bad or there is no 12 volt source.

If these all check good problem probably in the switch.

If this forum can't fix it, it isn't broke.

Re: Electrical gremlins - Turn signal and brake lights

Make sure all your bulbs and sockets have a good connection.  I needed to apply some sand paper to mine, cleaned them, then they worked.  This assumes that you have voltage at the socket.

Re: Electrical gremlins - Turn signal and brake lights

My thanks to all who have replied. Did some work to improve bulb contacts as well as on the turn signal cam canceller. I now have turn signals at all four corners but no brake lights. I'll be tackiling that tonight and i appreciate all the advice - "Some of the nicest people I've met are car nuts".
