I'm a little nervous about saying that I found the problem and all is well. I think it is and I'll see if I can rack up a thousand miles or so in the next couple of weeks to prove it.
Seems it had two problems. First, the custom grind I had done apparently had a little problem with what they are calling "runout". Seems this happens sometimes and makes a few thousandths of a high spot on the heel of the cam. This tends of pop the valve open a bit when it's supposed to be closed. That kills manifold vacuum and causes generally crappy running.
In the course of trying to determine what I had done or what was wrong, I rebuilt the dizzy along with a lot of other attempts. After the cam grinder told me how to determine if I had a cam problem...and I did...I got fed up with trying to make Ford EFI happy with aftermarket cams and installed a stock cam. It fired right up and ran great...just like it used to do before I got "hot roditus". That lasted until it got to operating temperature, then it went to hell. Unstable and poor idle and I noticed that the tach was indicating a loss of signal momentarily and randomly. Ignition trouble.
So I started swapping parts: plugs, wires, coil, TFI, dizzy cap...no help. So today I pressed the dizzy apart and replaced the new Hall sensor with an old Motorcraft item. Problem solved. It now runs like it's supposed to. Good steady idle, tach is steady, feels good...for a stocker. I think I'll be happy and if this lasts I'll say it's fixed.

Ya know, I discovered that investing the time necessary for ME to get a handle on tuning a Ford EEC is not as much fun as I thought it would be. Also, not as easy as I assumed it would be. It came down to a matter of time, and I simply am not prepared to invest the hours its apparently is going to take ME to learn how to do it right...and I hate not doing things as right as I can.
So I decided to just keep it simple and invest whatever time I have to things I've already learned or that I enjoy learning. Understanding the relationship of a thousand parameters is not something I need to do. Those parameters are what make EFI work so much better than a carb but I had to come to terms with the fact that I don't enjoy trying to master them.
So...sorry Sal, sorry Corky. Maybe in time you can forgive me.

BB - this logic is exactly why I keep mine 'mild' instead of 'wild'. I think this is maybe an age-related issue!

I installed an AFR gauge to give me the information I need to keep an eye on my carb performance. I'm also in the "happy with a carburetor" club. My car fires right up and is running smoothly. This makes me happy.

I'm right there wid-gee as far as not 'tearing one apart just for the fun of putting it back together again'!

So either I'm not to that age yet where it kicks in, or I'm a statistical outlier I suppose
I wasn't being serious BB, just busting your stones. In the end the hobby (read: obsession) is different for each of us. That's ultimately what makes it so great. If every car was built the same way there'd be little point to talking about it or looking at them.

I know, and I understand, and I probably got it coming which is OK...bring it on. You and Corky and Mike, and any others who wish to participate can beat me up at the next Bash to which we have all driven our cars.
And yes, you are not at that age yet and you may never get there which may be good for you. But is not good for me with this particular car.

Worst part is watching people I love have trouble....hate that. So far Jean and I have been very fortunate. Your granddad was right on. My rule is to find something every day that puts a smile on my face 'cause there ain't no guarantees about tomorrow.
The Heap: Just ran it up the hill east of us and back, a 15 mile climb of 2000 feet to 8k on cruise control at around 70 all the way. Then I ran a 40 mile round trip north. I really think it's a Happy Heap...me too.

Al: What, you aren't going to the Bash in 'Bama next year?
Lt Dan: Not a lot to tell. Just download about three inches of paper (How to, why to, when to) read it all...every word four or five times. Buy a Moates Quarterhorse and plug it into your A9L, etc. Download TunerPro (I recommend spending a few bux to get the RT version) or Tweeker, load it into your Winders based laptop. Rr-read all the info, maybe twice. Download the base tune from whatever source you want to use...I was pretty happy with EECDynotuning.com (Decipha is the head cheeze, guru and uses TunerPro) and dive in.
When I went to the mini-bash in Waco in '19 I had the XE 266 cam and I thought it was running out of gas at the lower elevations. That's when I bought the AFR gauge and a set of Siemens Deka 60 lb. injectors...way more that I would ever need but they are very linear and work fine at short pulse lengths. I tuned it to work with them and a cobra Maf and the AFR heads. Ran great until the mains died which had nothing to do with the mods since I never twisted it over about 5300.
There is a very good chance that I will leave the engine stock (except the heads) but go back to the 95 PCM and custom tune for the 4r70w trans, I really liked that trans. That'll be next year at the earliest since I promise not to touch it until after next year's bash.....PERIOD!!
