throttle pop up solenoid for AC

Hello out there everyone. I have been driving my 65 with the new motor a bunch now and needed to add a throttle pop up solenoid for when the AC is on, otherwise it will idle to low in gear, like from 650 down to 500. This is in a built 289 with a c4 tranny and a lumpy cam. I wired it to a on/off switch for now but would like to tag it to the AC. not sure if I can connect to the wire that goes to the compressor or not.

Re: throttle pop up solenoid for AC

I have the solenoid and tied it t the power for the compressor so they turn on together. Thanks running a vintage air unit and the compressor is on a relay. I haven’t had any issues to date.

Re: throttle pop up solenoid for AC

My idle is about 800-900 RPM, the RPM drops a little but not enough to cause an issue when the A/C (Vintage system) compressor kicks in.  I would think adding a relay to the A/C compressor feed to supply a separate feed (w/fuse protection) to the solenoid would not cause any “electrical” issues.

Re: throttle pop up solenoid for AC

Thanks guys, I was thinking that wire from the VA system to the compressor too, just wasn't sure. Since my wire is under the dash now I think I will send it over and under behind the dash and grab that wire.
Is my idle to low at 650 in gear for a 289 with a very lumpy cam ( its so lumpy it shacks the car when sitting at the light ) and 9.5 to 1 pistons? Its about 850 in park, all w/o AC on. Runs great though when you step on the gas hell yes.

Re: throttle pop up solenoid for AC

When I was running an automatic, the Ford manual gave info to set the idle as to when you put it in drive it ran at a certain RPM. I think mine was around 700.

Re: throttle pop up solenoid for AC

Does it want to 'creep' when at a traffic light and in gear?!
No need to shift into N when sitting at traffic light?!
700 RPM is 'just' 50 more butt make a great deal of difference with the AC blowing!
I'd idle-it-up to 700-ish and see if the problem goes away.

Re: throttle pop up solenoid for AC

Thanks 6sally6. Yes I love the idle and 700 rpms seems to be nice thats with the help of the pop up. This SBF really goes with or without the AC blasting

Re: throttle pop up solenoid for AC

Gotta ask - where did you get the solenoid?

TIA

I bought it and a mounting bracket through Summit. Both are made by Holley.

Re: throttle pop up solenoid for AC

I got mine from a vintage 72/351 that the AC dosnt work anymore. Been driving the car a bunch more with the hot weather and even with the AC cranked we dont go higher than 210. All my hot problems went away with the new engine. I love this built to the bones 289.
