Had a great weekend working on 65 FB with a friend from out of town

They live in Abilene which is about 4 hours away. So don't get to see them often. They came in so we could all go see Brad Paisley Saturday night.

Pete and I have gone round and round with the Holley carb tweaking to get the 1/4 initial lag out of the engine when you slam on the accelerator. We just seemed to be chasing our tail the last time we worked on the engine. Picked up a lot of advice during the Mustang Bash.

The decision was made early Saturday morning to go back to basics and start over. Leave the carb alone, leave the accelerator pump alone.  Start with the timing and make sure the vacuum levels stay at a good level. Got engine to TDC condition. Found my plug wires were shifted two posts clockwise. Fixed that and moved the distributor over two teeth to get back into TDC range. Vacuum range was not looking good, engine was pinging during hard acceleration. Car was lugging down even worse and would die at stop lights. We opened the distributor cap and found the little restrictors were keeping the weights from hardly opening up at  Wide Open Throttle. Changed those out and went to medium springs. Re-timed the engine. This 347 kept asking for more advanced timing than before. More drives and tiny tweaks. Readjust the carb a couple times and everything just settled down and started acting like a Mustang that wants to run.

Vacuum was sitting around 18. So the accelerator pump of 8.5 was left inside the carb. We changed the accelerator cam to slightly different profile and the lag was finally gone. Engine idles very well. Lag is gone. Doesn't die at stop lights. Turning on AC doesn't kill it anymore at idle.

Ready for a road trip/Mini Bash.

Oh and Brad Paisley concert was really good. Made our wives happy despite Pete and I playing cars all weekend.

Always said most "carb-issues" are ignition/timing.....Light springs RULE!!!!!!
Glad you "fixed-it"!
