After installing the new turn signal switch I found that it worked perfectly (it's the National Parts Depot "best repro"). But I also found that my horn didn't always work when the wheel was turned to one side or the other. After some experimenting I decided that there was too much space between the wheel and the column and tried to pull the column up after loosening the two fasteners under the dash. Despite my best efforts it simply would not move.
After some puzzling I wondered if maybe the spring between the column bearing and the steering wheel was keeping the two parts separate. I removed the wheel and gave the column a solid tug, then reinstalled the wheel. The column had moved up. It was up a bit too far but it was a piece of cake to edge it down to get the correct gap.
I learned another lesson too - after replacing the broken turn signal switch with a $100+ OE part it failed after only 300 miles. I found that one of the wires had gotten pinched in the brake pedal stop and shorted to ground, melting part of the switch. When I replaced that switch I put a heat shrink cover over a foot or so of the harness starting at an inch above the point where it exits the column to about 4 inches from the connectors. That's been keeping the wires in place and out of danger. There's supposed to be a sheath on there anyway, which was missing from my car. It's now been replaced and I think it will be of great help.
Now my horn works consistently and I hope my turn signals will no longer short under the dash. Best of all, I learned. Just thought I'd pass it along.
