    Valve stem length question????

    So as some of you may have read my other post I need to buy new valves.  I have measured them and the over all length is 4.930.  I can find one valve in that length and not another.  The closet I can find is 4.910 or 4.950.  I did find Ferrea valves in the same length of 4.935.

    So this got me to thinking, how much difference in the over all length is acceptable when replacing the valves?

    .005 'should' be able to compensate with rocker adjustment.....me tinkxz

    Question.  Would it work to grind down the 4.935 valve 0.005?  I do not know the metallurgy of valve steel and the math of the valve train geometry.  Would that throw the valve geometry out?

    Remember, valves rotate, so any grind job must be perfectly square, not something that can be done with any handheld tool.

    If you are not dealing with guide tip rocker arms, you might get away with it if you can grind the tips squarely.

    Some early engines had separate valve tips so you have to consider that.

    I doubt 0.005” removed will change geometry as long as you have adjustable valvetrain.

    Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

    I wasn’t to worried about the .005 but just wondered how much would be considered to much.   As for grinding them.  I do not have access to the machines I once had access to.  Plus I’m pretty sure the valve is not hardened all the way through.  I have fully adjustable roller rockers.
