Timing Question on 331....

So, almost didn't start this since it is such a 'controversial' topic and things can get derailed quick, but figured, eh, give it a go.

So finally finished my engine rebuild, basically a 5.0 roller block, 331 Scat stoker kit w/ probe pistons, Edelbrock alum. heads, and mild Edelbrock cam (7122 to be exact).  Comp. ratio is about 11:1.

So quesiton is, what timing do people usually see with build like this?  And follow-up - what is a good way to dial in the timing?  I'm running about 12 deg. now, but havn't been able to take it to the street yet (no brakes - sat too long). It obvsiouly increaes RPM when I take the timing to 20 BTDC

Another thing to tack on, what can I expect for idle RPM?  It seems high now, and stalls out when I take it lower.  So not sure if it is what to expect with this build, or if somehting else is going on.

Manifold vacuum is 10-12 in., right what the cam card says, but the neelde jumps aorund a lot (about +/- 1.5 inches) until I rev it a little.  To be expected? Or somehting wrong?

Thanks!

Re: Timing Question on 331....

Well simply put your vacumm gauge tells it all. Every engine is different and thus will require slightly different adjustments to get it tuned properly. It sounds like your motor is still in the break in peroid and may require ah few miles on it to get everything seated properly, valves, cam, rings, and so on. Before you can get a final vacumm reading. Here's ah really cool animation I found on how to read a vacumm gauge.........http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/186.cfm scroll down to the pic of the gauge face and click on the green bars.

Re: Timing Question on 331....

[size=100]W[size=75]hat have you done to the inside of the distrib? Stock springs.....MSD distrib......timing tape...?
Should be able to idle around 750rpm or so.
Did you degree the cam when you installed it....or just do the dot-to-dot?

Re: Timing Question on 331....

Distributor is a stock distributor outfit with a Pertronix, backed by an MSD and 45kV coil.  On the cam I just went dot-to-dot, didn't time it. Springs are stock for the Edelbrock head.

That gauge reading page is cool, and helpful!  Thanks!

Re: Timing Question on 331....

What works for me is......buy a timing tape (auto parts store/Summit) and stick it on you harmonic balancer. THAT way.....you can read the TOTAL amount of ignition advance and what RPM. You want a total of 36*+/- by 2000RPM to get the most bang for the buck. You will need aset of light weight springs installed inside your destrib. (There are several tutorials on the net with plenty of pictures.) the stock springs are so stiff you will NEVER get the magic 36* of ignition advance. Gotta have'm!
Ask anyone who has performed this mod.....it makes a NOTICABLE difference in pick-up and power.  Especially need it with a "hotted-up" camshaft because it is making your engine perform in a totally DIFFERENT way than when stock.
A good cam and heads and all the bells and whistles with a stock distrib is alot like "trying to puke with a rope around your neck"!
With the light springs in the distrib......rev engine to 2000RPM and turn distrib until the timing tape reads 36*........then lock it down. Let the initial end up where it ends up.
Once you do that the engine will rev way quicker....then adjust the carb to attain max vacuum.
Then go burn rubber!!
