Big block conversion

Hi everybody!.  I just bought a 1967 6cyl coupe that is 100% original and in awesome condition.  I am going to fit a built 428cj-4speed toploader .  Other than fitting a export brace and monty carlo bar what should I do to stop the towers from cracking?.  The engine is making a genuine 450hp and will get driven accordingly...lol.

Re: Big block conversion

Welcome to FYIFORD.  Glad you found us.

To put the 428 in that car, here are some things to change out.  I would consider them mandatory!

Weld the shock tower inner brace to the actual tower (vertical joint next to where the UCA bolts come through)
Install both torque boxes on the front frame rails.
Install big block front springs
Shelby export brace, not a cheapo, get the Scott Drake concours
Monte Carlo bar
Install big block rear springs
Install disc brakes
Install a 9" rear end or an 8.8" conversion with larger brakes
24" radiator
428 clutch linkage
big block drive shaft

You may already know about the rest of the stuff not related to the shock towers, but I thought I would throw it in, just in case.  Subframe connectors wouldn't hurt, too.

Where are you located?  I hope you can make it to the BASH Sept 28.  See the bash forum for details.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Re: Big block conversion

Thanks for the welcome guys, im a Aussie.

This 67 is a real time capsule, 53000 miles, never been painted and doesnt need to be, red trim in awesome condition etc etc. Its a shame to mod it BUT there's just no fun in a 200-3spd so 428cj it is.

A few more questions.

How many leaves does a factory manual big block have in the rear springs.

I have a low mile 69 front disc setup, is this a prefered option to use.

Can you give me more info on the torq box difference.

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.

Re: Big block conversion

Where in Australia?  Just landed and Sydney and headed to Perth on Sunday.  If you are out west I'd like to see your car.

Re: Big block conversion

Im on the other side of the country, about 80miles from the Melbourne CBD.  The jurys out on this car as Im not overly keen to fit torque boxes to such a original car.  I may try find a 67-68 S  code fastback, yeah i know hard to get.

Re: Big block conversion

Nice looking car - part of the value is based on what you intend to do with the car - if you are going to hang on to it regardless, then improvements that are made to improve or maintain the structural integrity are worth it. If you plan to sell, then they could detract from the value.  I personnaly don't think that the torque box add-on would drop the value but then I am not a points car person.

I get over to Melbourne every few years so we may cross paths at some point.
