Re: Driver side torque box completed...(Pics)

Now I just have to install the little gussets and this headache is finally done. This drivers side box has these factory holes in it ,I think for feul lines to pass through? I think when all is said and done I'll drill ah couple holes in the passenger side to match these ,and plug them with rubber gromets. I feel like these things need some sort of drain holes to them..

Re: Driver side torque box completed...(Pics)

Glad to see your inspirational pics.  I am getting ready to tackle mine.  Instead of using convertible boxes, I am going with 69 model.  I will have to narrow them slightly, but that should be pretty easy.  The hard part is that my car is on the 4-post lift and they are hard to get to.

You lucky-rotisserie-owning-guy.

Thanks for posting those.

Re: Driver side torque box completed...(Pics)

Looks like you did a nice job.  Is it a Vert. or are you just beefing it up.  What year did they start putting the torque boxes on all models?

Re: Driver side torque box completed...(Pics)

This is ah 66 coupe. I got the boxs from CJ pony they were listed as "65-66 coupe" boxs. If you already have your toe boards in then you'll have some careful trimming to do. If you look at the first pic you can see to the right where I had to trim out around the frame rails flange. And reverse the flange on the rocker side. I put it in my vise sandwiched between two boards so as to bend the whole flap at once. The most important thing to remember is your trying to fit these as flat to the toe board as possible, So your trimming and lining up all the indents and contours of the two panels. IT LOOKS SIMPLER THEN IT IS.

Seems like it might be easier to just make the back part of the torque box become the toeboards and remove the floors where the box exists?  Would that work?

You can ,and I've seen it done that way, but it's not how they were done from the factory. And after the 20 some cuts I had to make just to fit them this way. I could only imagine what ah PIA it would be

My thought process is that if the floorboards were out of the way, it would then be simple to weld the boxes to the sides from inside the car...  I have never installed torque boxes, so I have to learn all the pitfalls and things to make it strongest and easiest.

Re: Driver side torque box completed...(Pics)

I think our wires are crossed. The way the factory would install them is ,the boxes went in first (from the bottom), then they would lay the ( fire wall / toe board panel ) over the top (From inside the car). And spot weld the two together. The fitment problem comes when you try and (ADD) boxes to a 65-66 coupe that still has its toe boards in it (Chicken or the egg thing). Thats why i had to split them apart, and trim some off the sides, and reverse the "rocker side" flange. I'm I makin any sense? I'm corn fused

Re: Driver side torque box completed...(Pics)

Heck, far... I don't know...  I bought the ones that are in three separate pieces so you don't have to disassemble them to weld them in.  I see from your pics that you DO have to use the floor boards in conjunction with the boxes.

I'll have to get Tyler to scrape out all the old undercoating and seam-sealer and then wire-wheel the entire area so I can see what has to happen to fit the later model boxes in there.

My welder misses me.  I haven't used it since this morning.
