Bash Thrash starts

Our town had a road rally to benefit a fitness center they are building.
Took my 2 oldest granchildren with me in the Coupe. Got to the farthest point away on the trip and the Mustang died.
Sitting at a stop sign for 20 to 30 seconds and just died. Has no spark. Fuel pump runs and has pressure. Pushed it into a parking lot and went back with a trailer and picked it up. Now I get to figure out what went out.

Can you pull codes?

Re: Bash Thrash starts

That probably would have been the smart thing to do, but i unhooked  the battery to try and see if resetting the ecu would do anything. Didn't help.

Re: Bash Thrash starts

A drippin pot still has to have spark.
I did trace down the culprit to the TFI module though. (I think). Have one and a new coil on order. Coil is 28 years old so i figured it might be time also.
Speaking of drips, after i hauled the coupe home, the water pump decided it needed to be looked at also. Marked its spot with a little green puddle.

Re: Bash Thrash starts

Once it gets its first bash nervousness over with, it will be ready to go to many future ones with minimal complaint.   Hope the new parts take care of it for you.

Re: Bash Thrash starts

Well a new TFI module did the trick. Started right up again. Put the new coil and took it for a spin.
Tightened the water pump bolts. Will see if it still leaks.

Re: Bash Thrash starts

Yup, the Heap left me high and dry earlier in the year.  Left the breakfast gathering, got to the first stop...died, ded. due to TFI.   Now I carry a complete, tested dizzy with the required tools for a swap.

BB…I thought it was your PIP squeaker?

Re: Bash Thrash starts

That was a year ago, Dan.  Found that one in the shop.  Thats when I started carrying the spare dizzy.  The TFI failure was a couple of months ago and was near the house, I let AAA get me home.  Yeah, a PIP failure is scarry 'cause you gots to press the dizzy apart to fix it.

Re: Bash Thrash starts

Had taken the remote part of mine off and put it on the dizzy again when i was chasing my backfire problems. Went ahead and put remote mount back on when i put this one on. Might have to throw a spare dizzy in now.

Re: Bash Thrash starts

I had to replace the TFI, coil, and PIP all within 6 months…it was like one failed at a time.
Definitely a learning curve at the time.

Re: Bash Thrash starts

Yeah, battery measures 12.8, start the car with no accessories running, it measures 12.4.
It is not making my wife too confident about taking it 785 miles. Keep telling her it will have all new parts by then if it keeps this up.

Re: Bash Thrash starts

Make sure you carry spares on your bash trip. After the Junction City mini bash I drove up thru Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa to visit a few friends. I had a starter, coil, and condenser fall, all of which were less than six months old.

Is this
Bearing-Starter-Coil-Condenser-Bob?  Or an imposter with terribly bad luck?
Condenser???? I haven’t seen one of those in maybe 30 years. I guess that is why I haven’t had one go out in thirty+ years. On my 70 Boss 302.

Re: Bash Thrash starts

i don't think my trunk will be big enough to carry all the spares.

Wondering what  i need to add to my order. I have a new alternator, distributer and a spare belt ready to order. Already have a new waterpump.

Aww come on. Those parts I listed are the small parts I carry, and will fit on the floor behind your seat. And that's not including the floor jack and jack stand. After Ft Walton Beach BB1 likes my plethora of stuff.
