So ... this guy has had this since his neighbor took it out of an apparently 89-90 mustang.. had been rebuilt once, and put like 40k miles on it after the rebuild. All this is what info I got.. The guy was supernice , had given his 66 mustang to one grandson, and was redoing a late 90's mustang for his grand-daughter and was going to surprise her.. So just meeting him was worth the money LOL .. i got this transmission basically for free.. paid him $50 bucks for his time..
So this transmission came with a torque converter which still has liquid in it. It does NOT have tail extension housing, and a transmission fluid dip stick. has all the rest. is a two bolt starter.. I am just SUPER excited , and you know , it is a small risk!!
bob is being extremely nice to let me borrow his transmission rebuild tools that he made.
All that to say .. I am STOKKED!!
I told him that I will post his parts on this forum, so he can sell whats left too. He wanted me to take it all, but I just couldnt bring home all that , and still sleep in my own bed. LOL ..
I need help recognizing the year on this transmission! and hence the AOD project begins! :D

one thing different about this transmission is that the pan is not a flat bottom, it has an area that comes lower.. like a triangular shape protrusion .. dont know what that signifies.

alright the mustang thing was untrue.. it is out of a 4x4 bronco.. hence why no tail extension housing, and the tail output shaft is smaller. I will need a new shaft there, with the right governor, and a tail housing, to make sure this is fit for my 2wd mustang. The rest of the transmission apparently is the same 2wd or 4wd..
the bottom of the pan having that protrusion is also a giveaway apparently that its a 4x4 tranny. I am about to call PATC to have their rebuilder give me answers as to what all I will need (if I missed anything) .. hey live and learn. :D I am still rebuilding this though

great find! im jealous lol

ok .. so talked to PATC builder , and he said the ONLY difference is a tail shaft in the two trannies. So I am good PHEW!
now.. he told me that the ONLY way to know the year is take off the oil pan, and filter, and under it look for the stamped numbers.. those numbers denote what year it is
ALSO, before ordering the rebuild kit, to take the whole thiing apart, and find out if I have stamped steel drums or cast iron. SO I can order the right rebuild kit
Recommended a superior AOD HP shift kit, and a super servo upgrade for the AOD (just like Bullet bob had told me too!)
This is fun :D

Good Luck! I will stay tuned.

Why stop there? Make a 4X4 Mustang.

Like monster company made one...!!! Yes!!!!! But I definitely won’t be taking this one mudding anytime soon.
So I’ll compromise and leave it a 2wd
Now one day if I become an expert drift racer , I will definitely consider a 4x4 conversion and convert the mustang to drift Car ....

With a transfer case, you could use the front shaft to run a HV oil pump.
I don’t have a transfer case ... but lmao! I don’t know how that would work!

Well now you know how I did the AOD trans for $1000.00...found a good trans out of a smashed but running truck.
Installed a shift kit and I was good to go.

Not sure if you have discovered yet, but there are two different length tail shafts on AOD's. Using my eyeball, it seems you have the shorter one. I thought I would mention this before you go buy the first tailshaft cover you find. Also, it seems if that particular tailshaft doesnt have the speedo drive. Mine is the longer tailshaft, an earlier AOD model, and it had the worm gear area directly machined into the shaft itself.

There are now that I find 3 kinds of shafts.
the one you see the shortest one : for 4X4 trucks
the one you mention are the two 2WD options with the speedo worm gear pattern machined in.
15inch total (10 inches inside the tail ext housing ) for mustangs
16inch total (11 inches inside the tail ext housing) for crown vics, grand maqueese, town cars etc.
I will be needing to get a 89+ 15inch tail shaft for my mustang.. (89+ because it has extra oiling/lubrication passages)

REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
