Quarter repair questions

Hey guys, as I've been making my way through the car I've had a couple questions developing in my mind about what I should do with my rear quarters on my 66. Both panels fit the car amazingly well and besides being rusted along the flares against the wheel wells they are in really good shape. As much as i know that replacing them is the proper option I just feel that it would be a shame to remove the whole panel over such a small area of damage. I've been considering flaring the rear panels and I was wondering what everyone thought about just creating flares that would remove the rusted section of the panel instead of full skins. Any other suggestions would also be amazing in helping me along with this project as I am still in high school and so my time and budget aren't as open as I'd like.

Re: Quarter repair questions

Hey Cameron,  If the vast majority of your quarters are in decent shape, I would go with a wheel arch patch panel.  You will probably also need the lower quarter patch panel (for behind the tire) because the wheel arch patch panel does not go all the way to the bottom, and behind the tire is often rusted, too.  And you will probably also need to buy outer wheel houses (to cut up and patch the lip onto the solid part of the original wheel house).  Here's a link to the wheel arch patch panel I refer to:

Re: Quarter repair questions

Instead of adding flares, and with the rust you describe, you probably need the outer wheelhouse, I would roll the fender and wheelhouse lips to fit your tire.

Re: Quarter repair questions

I agree.  Is not worth reskinning the entire quarters if only small sections are damaged.  Get patch panels if needed for the contours and just cut them up and use the sections you need.  My advice here is that there is a right and wrong way to do this.  Spend a lot of time getting the patches to fit perfectly to the old metal.  Tack them in, and then fully weld them using tacks in alternating locations (to avoid warping).  You don't want so much as a pinhole in the seam.  You are going to need a little filler to smooth things out even if your work is near perfect.  All it takes for the rust to come back and the paint to be ruined is one tiny hole where moisture can get to the filler (it doesn't matter if you drive the car in the rain or not, this will eventually happen from just the moisture in the air), so you need a seam that's fully welded.  Then dress the weld, fill any voids if necessary (a copper spoon works great to back up areas and prevent blow through), redress if needed, and then you're ready for filler, sanding, priming, etc.

Re: Quarter repair questions

Read Hakan’s Phoenix Project build page. Good example of doing it right. I am a fan of fitting 95% of a new quarter panel rather than a wheel arch section. It is harder to get a wheel arch panel to fit right than installing a full quarter, but fitting it to existing panel edges.
