Mistery oil leak

Hello all,
I have a stock 65 289, 2bl with auto in a coupe, It has 130K and i recently did my oil change and now found some oil on the top side of the filter, like it has dripped down from somewhere. The only place I can see is that the head gasket looks oily. Any ideas. could it be the valve cover gaskets at the front corner although the head looks dry. Just wondering if head gaskets can do this?

Slammed Big Blue, ran over the varmints that messed with the Stang. Now all is good in the NW

Re: Mistery oil leak

Wash it all off and then when you see the leak again back trace it. You might need to do that a couple of times. It could be the intake, the valve cover, head gasket, distributor, oil cap, timing cover, oil pressure sender, etc. I'm no help.

Re: Mistery oil leak

Head gaskets do not leak oil, in my experience. The timing cover, front intake seal, distributor seal or valve cover is more likely.
Wash it at the car wash and let it dry. Spray the area with some Wal-Mart jock itch spray. (Yes, seriously) and let it dry. Drive for five miles and you will be able to see traces of the oil leak path in the powder. You can wash it off with a garden hose and some dishwashing soap, or the car wash.
Be advised the air from the cooling fan can make oil travel around.

Oil down low can be timing cover crankcase seal or oil pressure sender or oil pan front seal.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Re: Mistery oil leak

Did you physically throw the old seal from the old filter away? Any chance it's still there?

Re: Mistery oil leak

I've had oil from valve cover gaskets go all over the place while not seeming like a valve cover leak.  If the gaskets are old, and especially if they are cork I would just replace them as preventative whether it solves your issue or not.  I only use rubber valve cover gaskets with a steel core now.  Reusable and no leaks, ever.

Re: Mistery oil leak

It could also be the fuel pump.
