69 Shelby GT350 351W??

Hello everybody.. I have a motor I thought I knew what it was. C9OE-6015-B-5   9A231548  mustangtek says 69-70 351W Shelby GT3350. these are the numbers on the block. My friend said yesterday the heads have the small plugs 5/8 socket. suppose to be 13/16. said it's not 69' Shelby and he doesn't know what going on there. I would appreciate any help. What is it? Thank You, Bill

Re: 69 Shelby GT350 351W??

I believe the 9A231548 us a partial VIN of the car the engine came from.
9- 1969 model year
A- Atlanta assembly plant
231548- sequential serial number

Since Atlanta did not build Mustangs it isn't a Shelby engine. As far as that goes I'm sure it was nothing more than a 351W 4V that would have gone into any Ford car. Carroll Shelby had nothing to do with the Shelby GT 350s and 500s that were built in '69 and there were no modifications done to the engines.

Also... when I looked these numbers up on mustangtek it showed the green confirmed symbol for C9OE-6015-B-5  69-70 351W Shelby GT350. I'm Lost on this one. Thank You again

Re: 69 Shelby GT350 351W??

The block casting number isn't going to tell you its for a Shelby or anything else really.  Shelbys didn't ever get specific engines.  The early cars that Shelby actually touched showed up at his shop as 289HiPo engines and some of the bolt ons were changed to increase power output.  The amount of actual Shelby in the cars declined from the first year to the end of production.  By the end they were mostly loaded up cars with an appearance package using the Shelby name to sell more expensive cars for Ford.

The block casting number simply corresponds to a '69-'70 model year 351W.  Could it have been used in Shelbys?  Sure, but it was for obvious reasons more likely to have come from something less valuable.

As for the partial VIN, unfortunately it doesn't prove anything.  I'd love to tell you that no one ever stamped a new VIN onto a milled down pad (removing the real number and replacing it with another), but it happens all the time.  Sadly, when money is involved people often do unscrupulous things.  The correct heads should have the larger plugs as noted, as the early 351s used the larger 18mm plugs with the 13/16 hex.

Re: 69 Shelby GT350 351W??

If you pull valve covers off, there will be cast marks in head to help you determine year and size motor heads were made for.  351W C9 heads use 13/16” spark plugs.

My '70 D0OE heads use 13/16" plugs.  I would imagine '69's would use the same plug, and the next few years, too.

Re: 69 Shelby GT350 351W??

It's a 50 year old car, a lot happens over this time. Cars back then weren't looked upon a future collectables and were driven hard. After 100k miles the cars back then were basically used up. Very common for engines and transmissions to be replaced.
