On my 65 coupe, the door body tag with the VIN has the last 6 digits as 640703 and this is what is on the title. I know doors can easily be replaced. The fender aprons on both the drivers and passengers side are stamped with 540703. In my research I found 400000 and 500000 were blocked out for Cougars I thought. All other characters on the VIN are the same except the 6 and 5 on the production number. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Don't know anything about Cougar Vins butt (TS&T) it seems to me that it would be very unusual for Ford to set aside a block of 100K in 1964-5 for a car that wasn't going to be produced until late 66. Maybe Mercury numbers but why Ford Mustang? You might be able to get that answered by the Marty folks.
It does appear to be an issue with the mismatch between the fender aprons and the door tag. Sounds like someone used the wrong number along the line. the apron numbers are the ones that should be on the title. Strange things tend to happen over the many years to older cars and their VIN's.

There was no Mercury Cougar in 1965 so there would not have been any VINs "set aside" for them.
What is the complete VIN? Don't worry- nobody can claim your car is actually theirs just because they know the VIN. For example, mine is 5R09C139711.
I just looked on the website In Search of Mustangs and there are no Dearborn Mustangs with a consectutive unit number beginning with 4XX,XXX and there is only one Mustang listed with a 5XX,XXX number.

I'm probably wrong about the block of numbers used for Cougars but I have seen multiple posts about the 400000 and 500000 numbers not being used. When I look in the I can't find a single entry that has a 5 in that digit. Also, when I look at the numbers around 640703 they about the same build date as mine. The build date on the door tag is 22B. The date codes stamped in the sheet metal are also around the same date. The full VIN is 5F07T640703 on the door tag and 5F07T540703 on the fender aprons.

Here's what I found for 1965 Mustangs
Dearborn began with early mustang production using 250001
San Jose began with 125001
Later, Metchen began production with 130001
I also discovered that the numbers 5 and 6 were blocked by an other FOMOCO division.
Just for grins, I looked at the title for my sons 67 Cougar XR7.....the sixth digit begins with "6"
As for yours, clearly a mis-stamp. The fender apron vin is what the car is to be titled under. Are those stamped numbers easily readable? Any chance they are lightly stamped or built up with paint making it hard to read?

It appears that the guy stamping VINs on the assembly line needed a pair of glasses. I don't know what type of tool they used to stamp the VIN but he obviously put a 5 where a 6 was supposed to be and he did it on at least 2 different cars.
The guy stamping out the Warranty Plates got it correct.
