New water pump

Since I had to pull my timing cover to remove the broken off dip stick tube I figured I might as well replace the vintage checker auto parts rebuilt water pump that has worked fine for 25 years.

While on the phone with Bearing Bob we touched on water pumps. RPM mentioned he had a high flow aluminum jobber on his stroked 351. That got me to thinking. Aluminum, why not. So I ordered a Airtex aluminum water pump and it arrived today. I trust Airtex as they are the OEM supplier of the water pump on my 7.3L diesel and the current pump on said diesel. 240,000 miles on the original and 160,000 miles on the replacement.

Time will tell on the Mustang. Here are some pictures of the old cast iron and the new Airtex aluminum pump. Let me know what you think.

Re: New water pump

Looks like the new one has a mounting boss missing at the bottom, hope it's not an issue.

Rudi, you have good eyes. The new one is missing the mounting boss and it was unused in my application. I wonder what it was/is for.

Re: New water pump

Hopefully boss wasn’t for air conditioning. 😂

Nice looking pump.

Is impeller steel?
Do you have part number?

I'm thinking that "water pump grease" was well before my time.
