Yup 6=8, it was proven back in the early days when they said they couldn't drag with the V8s cause they were to fast. My buddy has a nicely built 292 that runs as good and pulls harder than my SBC ZZ4 (355ci,) both are in 5K lb pickups.

Just proves the theory:

There were and are a lot of impressive engines that march in a row.
Have you ever heard a 2JZ -GE or an XK6 in a, E-Type in full song, either one were something to hear coming up the back straight of Mosport.
Sorry no sound clips.

Yep ... that Jag engine was waay ahead of its time.

For those with a 6 cylinder, I always found this article a good read...

Steve, that’s a good read even for non sixers...is that a word? 😁
My wife has the 300/ 4 speed in her 79 F150 4x4.
Love the torque.
It just doesn’t pass a gas station though.
It has a single tank and heavy right foot!😂

I think what you can do with a 6 cylinder is pretty amazing, especially these days with the engineering and alloy heads etc. There are also some pretty impressive dyno runs on YouTube with 6 cylinders. I heard years ago that 6 cylinders develop torque quicker than a V8, but I never compared test results to see for myself.

My cousin had one of the last years of the 300, when it was considered a 4.9, and it had EFI. I sure couldn't tell it wasn't a V8. I never saw a dyno test, but if it was a legit test (not Ford skunking the numbers so the V8 was worth the upcharge) I'd bet the six made more torque than the V8. All the engineering was there for it to do it. It had larger cylinders, and particularly a longer stroke.
I heard that the 300 was the finality of a design that came from the same guy who had designed the I6 in the Hudson Hornet which dominated NASCAR for 4 years. Basically he knew overhead valves were needed to get over 300HP (in racing trim) without supercharging, but Hudson didn't have the engineering budget to develop it. I6s started to fall out of favor as cheap V8s started to become available so the design just sat for a decade or so until Ford needed a new six for the Falcon. By 1965 the 300 was being built, and Ford's six was now only 8 cubes smaller than the L-head Hornet engine.

Did they every follow up this article? I'm curious to see if they put the motor in a car and what gas mileage you can get out of it.

Interesting article. I'd love to see the dyno sheet on it. I'm thinking 200HP and 300 lbs/ft., and a torque curve you could lay bricks on.

I don't know of any follow-up article, but maybe there is.

I think I saw some dyno results somewhere... I will try to find them for you.

Found some dyno test results TKO and here is a Hot Rod article boasting 235HP out of a six cylinder -
