Brake light switch on my 65

Can someone please explain how this switch is to work. I have it install the way it looks like it is to be. but the only way I can make it work is if I push it up or pull it down. When I do that it pivots and triggers the switch. It seems like it should be sold with the brake arm?? then it would get the pivot it needs to come on.

Ok found that putting  a shim in between the switch and the brake rod, it and it works like new.  Thanks everyone
