331

Turned over the 331 to the owner today.  Had a few issues with spark plug to header clearance. Ended up with acell short plugs and 135 degree wires.  Also used the torch to clearance the the headers and added insulation sleeves. Was very pleased with the test drive . I  think the cam choice was good. It was a flat tappet cam . Even taking it easy broke the tires lose with ease.

Re: 331

Oh youse guys.... Getting me all worked up about a 331.  Thinking I may  build one with my brand new 5.0 block and install it along with the 4R70W that's setting on the shop floor.

What cam and heads did you use on that build, Steve?

Re: 331

My goal's to have mine running in my '89 GT this year.  I built mine on a 5.0 block with a DSS kit (10.5:1 compression).  AFR 185 Renegade heads, Crane 449631 cam (112 degree LSA, 0.542/0.563 lift, 220/228 lift @ 0.050"), Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, JBA shorties, 30lb/hr injectors, Accufab 70mm TB, and Pro M 80mm MAF.  Should be in the 425-450HP range NA and can take as much nitrous as the stock block can without splitting if I want to spray it.

Now I need to step on Astro Performance's neck to get the kit for my T5.  Only been waiting a year...

Re: 331

Don't forget the ZDDP at every oil change or it will really be a flat tappet cam.  Also, I really like the Joe Gibbs break in oil I've been using.  I think its worth it to get dedicated break in oil, especially with the concerns a flat tappet cam poses.

Re: 331

All comp cam valve train.  Used comp cam break in oil.  They recommend a 30 minute break in run then change the oil to their high zinc oil. I have never done this before,  but with the cost of parts I did it.
