Re: stock power steering shudder?

What kind of car?
What year?
Is the system all new parts?  Rebuilt? Original equipment type?  Rack and pinion?

Did you purge the air out of the system?

Re: stock power steering shudder?

66 fastback.
all new parts and or rebuilt.
cant find any thing that is wrong.
i have bled it as has another mechanic, just not altering how or when the shudder comes in.

its factory style ram system.  so no rack.

i think i am leaning towards changin it over to the borgeson box.

Could you please explane in detail exactly what it is doing and at what rpm's. It sound as id there is something binding at low revs due to a lower pressure output from the pump. You may have to put a pressure gauge on it to see what is going on.

Re: stock power steering shudder?

at idle or near to idle she will shudder as you turn either left or right.
if your rpm is up to say 1000-1100 rom this shudder goes away.  you got me thinking and i tried that.
so it very well might be the pump.
pump is what appears to be year correct power steering pumnp.

it is not the saginaw type.

so maybe a new pump or check this ones preassure?  what does this type system require to operate correctly in the normal car enviroment?>

Re: stock power steering shudder?

Are you running stock pulley sizes?  An underdrive crank pully might not spin the P/S pump fast enough but it sounds like it might be the pump.  Are you running stock/correct fluid?

stock pullies are on the car

Re: stock power steering shudder?

My guess would be the pump.

Sometimes when I pressure check a pump after rebuild, the pressure will fluctuate over a greater range than normal. Since I am testing at very low pump RPM, there is always some of this, but every once in a while the needle on the gauge will swing back and forth a lot.

I think this is due to a weak spring in the pressure valve inside the pump. The pump will easily reach max pressure, open up to bypass, then shut again. Normally this will level out under operating conditions, but it will be more pronounced at low pump speed.
