I am sorry to bring this up but I dont seam to have anyone else to bonce things off. My 65 stock 289 auto with a 2 core 1" tube Champion radiator will not stay cool at idle with the AC on and its not really hot out. I have a 17" Derali HO fan (says it moves 2400 cfms) with a autocoolguy controller. I only have 3-1/2" of clearance. Where I think my problem is with 324 sq in of radiator and 225 sq in of fan. No shroud. That is like 2/3rds of the radiator Inlet and outlet on same side. Should I make a shroud?

Yes

Looks like it's a 2 speed fan, pusher or puller.
Is it getting high speed, and working as a puller?

Yes wired on Hi speed and pulling

new shroud will have 3/4 max inside for air flow. I will send pics of the build

Get a shroud its a night and day difference :-)

My shroud is only about 3/4" deep. Works just fine. I made it from some 1/8" thick aluminum plate and 3/4" x 3/4" angle. Riveted together and painted black.

Is fan running while a/c is on?
Are you using transmission cooler in radiator as well?

Below is my setup. Provides adequate cooling even when using the Vintage A/C system in traffic or on the open road.

Aluminum radiator-Summit stock 289 two row 1” tubes (Northern Radiator stamp), like BobE radiator...don’t remember part number.
Electric fan-Summit (sum-g4903) 14” rated at 1585 cfm...no additional shroud, on with ignition only via a relay.
Used with 289 (.030), stock type water pump, 180 thermostat, transmission cooler used with c4 with additional external cooler inline, stock water pump pulley.
Currently with 5.0L/T5, stock ‘92 type water pump, 190 thermostat, transmission cooler not in use, stock water pump pulley.
I currently do not have a/c installed.
Haven’t had problems.
Hope this can help.

My solution to this is a steel ridged six blade big a.. fan, no shroud. I've never had an overheating problem even when I was still running the stock rad with the c4. Mildly modified 289. Aluminum 3row rad.

Derale seem to say to use a shroud in puller configuration.
Online!

Are there electric fans without shrouds?

Here is what I built today. And friday saturday we are going to get hot 88-90 OH NO HOT lol. Anyway 3/4 x1/2 aluminum angle and a piece if 1/8 plate A jig saw and a skill saw . I think it turned out good because I can install or remove without pulling hoses. Its close at the pump and a bitt closer at the AC, but the motor doest move forward so It should be fine.

Looks very similar to my setup. Nice job.

Very well done. I have a huge appreciation for those who take the time and do things right.

Thank all of you. I work on a budget and if I can make it I will. I love this car. I just have had cooling issues I guess from day one. Cant wait to rebuild the motor this fall for BASH 2021.
And I just found out I get my new booster/pedal from MS on saturday, I know what I will be doing.
Anyway I will up date you all after this heat wave fo 88 degs.

Great Work!

I went out and tested today, not hot out but was holding temp at idle with AC on. tomorrow will be the real test

What about your radiator cap?? What pressure? More pressure will make it boil LATER. Shelby apron 'cured' mine. Maybe a remote A/T cooler?!

13lb cap. The other day with about the same temp maybe a deg or 2 cooler it was idling at 210, today with new shroud 192. And it didn't even get hot until I pulled off the freeway to turn around. I am running 50/50 mix. I will update everyone after it melts tomorrow in the heat lol
You all are a big help, I really do thank you all for the input.

I replaced my original radiator many years ago, I started with a 13# and had similar issues without a/c.
When I changed to 16# with new brass radiator, that issue disappeared.
Still using 16# with my aluminum radiator for 289 and 5.0
A/c will increase the inlet temp to radiator, especially noticeable at idle.
With clutch fans at idle it is noticeable as well as “grapevine” inclines even at interstate speeds in hot temperatures.
Nice looking fan shroud too.

Thank you I mite look into a different cap but still waiting for the heat wave.

IF Oregon is like Gig Harbor, Wash. weather........you may be waiting awhile for a "heat wave"!
Although...when I visited there last summer they were 'suffering' from a heat wave. I think it got up to 90* during their 4-day heat wave! After that it drop back to the normal of 68-72* summertime weather. Then Labor Day rolled around and the rain started until Mother's Day.
According to "a-trusted-source... they don't tan there....they rust!"
It's a GREAT place to visit though.........
