I currently bought Hooker Headers for a 1970 Mach 1 351C and my mechanic is having no luck getting these installed.
The headers I bought were the 6920-1HKR long tube headers
The heads I have are TRickflow 51616203-C00 62cc
Love to hear from someone who has installed headers on this car and engine.
What kind of headers?
Secret installation tips?

The exhaust port in those heads is raised 0.100". Raised exhaust ports often cause header fitment issues. It's less than 1/8", but it can be enough to cause the headers to hit things they ordinarily wouldn't.
I can also tell you that the headers are designed for 4V heads and the heads you have are based on 2V ports.
Furthermore those headers don't claim to fit a Mustang; they're for mid size Ford/Mercury vehicles (Fairlane, Cyclone, Ranchero, etc.). The correct part number for the Mustang is 6210-1HKR. That said, there's still no guarantee of compatibility with the heads, because these are also listed for 4V heads and I can't say what effect the raised ports may have.
It sounds to me like you have mismatched parts. I know there are a couple guys here who have Clevelands, so hopefully they chime in with specifics as far as what will fit. Welcome to the forum.

This won't be much help, but I installed Hooker Super Comps on a 1970 Mach 1 with a 351C 4V 4 speed about 28 years ago. Harder than a 302 based car, but still doable. If I recall right - disconnect motor mounts, drop the drag link and steering ram, remove the starter and clutch linkage, and put them in from the bottom. The reverse lockout rod had to be left out I think, and patience is required. Don't think we even had to clearance them back then - don't know if the jigs are the same now.

Thank you for your reply. I had the Mustang shop order these headers so it may look like the wrong ones were ordered. I have called Trickflow and they have assured me that both 4v and 2V headers will fit
Is there a way that my mechanic can contact you directly?
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
