Here's a look at the 2,3,4 mains. 3 is all copper and 4 is in the steel.

Re: Does this mean there is a problem?

Maybe I'll figure out what caused this when I get it apart.  Engine has less than 40k on it and other than a few pulls to 5 grand last week for data logging it has never been flogged.
Don't know, Barry, what I'll build.  Maybe just sell the remains and buy a used Beemer Vert.
And NO Gary, one Bearing Bob is plenty!!

Re: Does this mean there is a problem?

Huh, well that sucks.  I'd want to know why though.  I've seen engines that had 200k on them where the bearings didn't look like that.  Did you cut that filter apart?  Wondering if it got plugged somehow.  Or maybe there was a leak in the top end that was so bad it resulted in oil starvation to the mains?

Re: Does this mean there is a problem?

Sorry to see that BB. BTW, you can never have too many Bobs, Bullet, Bearing or otherwise.

Re: Does this mean there is a problem?

I'm thinking it's gotta be oil starvation, with the recent loss of oil pressure. Mismatched main to crank bearings doesn't look like that does it?

Haven't cut the filter yet, spent the day getting the underside ready for the engine pull.  Will do top-side tomorrow and then carefully finish the teardown.  I agree, something caused a lack of oil but I don't know what...yet.  It appears that the old sender died but I'll find a way to prove that.  Would be a hell of a coincidence and I have a problem with coincidence.
The crank is (was) standard/standard and I'm pretty careful about preassembling every thing and checking clearances with telescope gauges and mikes.  But....stuff happens.
Thanks for the help, guys.  I'll keep you all in the loop.

Re: Does this mean there is a problem?

The sender could'a clogged up with some of that gold dust. Maybe the metal content caused it to read infinity.

Re: Does this mean there is a problem?

Well...................so much for my 'idea' that it ain't broke cause it didn't make no noise!
Gee Bullet..I hate that for ya.
Was that a Melling oil pump you used?!
Did it 'eat-the-crank"? (no pun intended DON!!)..or did the bearings do their job and save crank damage?
How many miles on the roller lifters? (Swat-happened to mine once...lifter wheels got eat up and scattered sparkly stuff in the pan.) and scrubbed the inserts.

So many questions........ Just glad it didn't "leave-ya" on the side of a mountain some-werz! (with Jean!....holding a pistol!...while you hitch-hiked for help!.....and a stranger picked you up!.....in a Shivel-lay flatbed!.....that had  Reacher riding shotgun!...andyou had to ride in the bed of the truck!.....and it started snowing!.....and got dark!.....and the corona -virus had all the stores closed!.....cause you still live in a 'blue-state'!....and had to ride to a "red state')!...

Re: Does this mean there is a problem?

That really sucks Bob. I feel bad with ya. I know 40K miles ain't a lot, but its more than the 6K that I got!!!

I would want to know why it happened too. I guess you will be looking at everything as you take it apart. Take lots of pictures too.

Re: Does this mean there is a problem?

Thanks for the kind condolences guys.  I'm not too worked up over it...just didn't want to take time to build an engine right now but.....
I think I might just go ahead and stuff the 4R70W and '94 computer in while I'm at it.  That is after I rebuild the 4R70W.
Hopefully the heads/lifters/etc will still be usable but something got all this started.  I'll be trying to find out just what in the next couple of days.

Mike:  You are tooooooooooooo much.  Had me rollin' on the floor and LMAO.   THANK YOU

Re: Does this mean there is a problem?

My condolences BB. Sometimes things like this happen for a reason. I had a 250 in my 68. I got all of 600 miles on it, and it spun rod bearing. Pulled it and put in the 351W and never looked back. Now you can take your time - build that engine, build that 4R70W, do all those little things you've been putting off on the car because you didn't have a good reason to do them right then. Now you do. Full speed ahead! Git 'er done!

Re: Does this mean there is a problem?

I wouldn't reuse the lifters out of that engine.  You're talking clearances measured in ten thousandths of an inch.  No way to really inspect them either.  Not worth the risk.

I agree Tom.  The lifters were a set of new ones that I inherited from my brother and they were always noisy, even when I had the stock heads/rockers on the engine.  Are there ANY rings/bearings/seals, and other parts that ARE NOT made in the land of Wu?

Thanks Ron, yeah I'm thinking since it should only add a week to the project I'll go with the 4R70W.  I have the 95 computer and the wiring is already in the harness so I just have to round up some parts and take a look at the insides of the trans.  And, I know a guy who has some tools....somewhere.
