New Engine

Finally got the 250 I-6 in and running well.  I love the way the car drives and sounds (it's exhausting through one of the 2-1/4 inch pipes I had on for the 351) - sounds sort of "snotty" but not obnoxiously so.  I am even able to use a stock air cleaner (from a 70's Mustang/Maverick) under the stock hood.

Paint me with a big happy face.

Now all I have to do is figure out what to do with the 351 ....

Re: New Engine

That's good Dan.

Kudos John!

I've got a buddy who has a six with manual tranny in a 68 that gets 30 mpg on the highway. I'd love to do one.

Re: New Engine

Way to go John.

I bet someone will be willing to take that 351 off your hands.

Re: New Engine

The Ford 200 and 250 were a pretty good engine. I am curious though, did you remove a 351 from the car and swap it for a 6?
If it were me, I would absolutely fit one of these heads to it -

I think you can really work a Ford six cylinder.

Re: New Engine

Growing up all my grandfather would buy for the farm or his construction business was in-line six ford F100’s, He gave me a 67 with a 240 and 3-speed when I started driving and I hated that truck at the time because all my buddies had V8’s. Then my firs car was a Maverick with a 250 and 3-speed, it looked cool but I had no love for the mother.
Now at 54, I would love to build a Mustang / Falcon with a 250 and T-5, or even better a F100 with a 300 and T-5.
At all the local cruise ins and cars and coffees when all you see is Coyote and LS transplants, I would love to pop the hood with a in-line with three carbs hanging off the side.

Yes, I did pull the 351 and replace it with a 6.  The 351 was fun but I never really used it and it was a huge pain to work on it.  My car was originally a 6 with 3-speed from the factory.  It came to me with a 289 and 4-speed and converted to the V-8 suspension, 71 disc brakes, ...

I've always liked the 6 cylinders.  I learned to drive in a 58 Ford with the 223 and a 3 on the tree.  That engine sounded awesome when it was wound up a bit.  I still prefer the sound of a 6 over that of a V8 - love hearing the Porsches on the tv race broadcasts.

As for the Mustang, I wanted to return it to a more original state and have something with more room to work on, even though it's still heavily modified.  I kept the T5 but have not driven it too much - still working on getting the front end aligned.

I have one of the aluminum heads on a shelf in the garage.  I chose not to install it because I wanted something original looking and because I was not sure I'd be able to fit a carb and air cleaner under the stock hood and because the headers I've seen don't appear to be made to clear the AC compressor up front or my starter in the rear.  Maybe at some point I'll put that on.

Sorry - probably TMI.

Re: New Engine

I understand your love for six cylinders John. I always said that if I had a classic with a six in it, I wouldn't change it over for a V8. Personally I think a lot can be done with a six, but I would definitely bolt on that alloy 2V head. You can get some decent horsepower out of these with the 2V heads and a set of headers. I think somewhere up around 170 - 180HP if I remember correctly? I don't think these options for air filter fitment are too bad?

Re: New Engine

Engine size and number of cylinders is basically meaningless once you leave atmospheric pressure behind.  They say there's no replacement for displacement.  Sure there is: its called forced induction.  My WRX only has a 4 in it, but its one of the most fun cars I think I've ever driven.  A bigger engine would just screw up the front/rear weight bias, which as it sits is almost perfect.  This reminds me, I need to bolt that blower onto my FJ...

Re: New Engine

My 1969 T5 coupe had a 250 in it.  Fun to drive, but definitely not fast to drive. I put a T5 tranny in it. The car had a 9” from the factory along with factory five lug power disc brakes and a export brace.

Something for everyone.

Re: New Engine

My Brother's 65 coupe with the 6cyl and 4 speed was the car to beat on the local SOLO scene back in late 60s. We moded the suspension a bit but was basically stock. Just beefed up springs and lowered a bit, added roll bar and good tires.
