I was all ready to fit my 302 efi in my 66 coupe with aod when I noticed that the water pump pulley would not line up with the crank pulley. I had fitted a new timing cover with a dipstick hole and new water pump. Now I realize that the water pump is a V belt pump and my alternator and crank pulley are serpentine. I would like to keep the serpentine so my only option is to drill and refit the original timing cover and pump at the moment. The timing cover does not have any extra "meat" where the dipstick needs to go. Anyone done this before or any advice greatly appreciated. The water pump is obviously a CCW rotation pump.
1966 289 coupe auto. 302 engine from fox body 5.0 HO.

Could you add a picture(s) of timing cover and water pump?

I will try as I never have posted a pic before.

Graham, did the pumb back plate stay attached ("glued") to the front cover?

Consider making your own pointer, bolted to the timing cover bolts. A wire coat hanger has been used in the past, but consider something a little more 'sturdy'.

That may have come out of a Fox body Mustang, but that is not a Fox body Mustang timing cover or water pump. I'm not sure what its from. I have the Ford parts index for '80-'89 and nothing from a V8 looks like that. The water pump cavity looks like the V6 covers, but the rest of it isn't right, I also don't know if they are interchangeable V8 to V6. Possibly it was from a truck application.

I'm pretty sure the engine was a crate engine as the fox mustang was a older non injection year and the engine had parts of stickers all over it but none readable. I could be wrong though. The guy I bought the car from was very vague. There was no backing on the pump. I will post another pic of the back of it.

Just to add... I'm sure I saw somewhere that the pump might have been from a 351. I will try to find where i saw it.
Thanks for the ideas and help. I have since drilled the timing cover succesfully.

That was a 94-95 5.0L water pump timing cover.
Picture request helps a lot sometimes.
You need a different cover for foxbody serpentine to line up.

Looks like Explorer timing cover. Will not work with Mustang Foxbody pump or pulleys.
The new timing cover I used on Warley’s 5.0 was drilled for a dipstick and fit the reverse rotation pump. Bought it new on ebay around $60

Just looked at Rock Auto, apparently 94-95 Mustang and Explorers used same timing cover.
I learned something new today. 😁

Thank you all for your support. I really appreciate it.
I have taken time off work to get this upgrade going so might just get the AOD in behind the 289 and get the driveshaft length sorted. I can do the suspension upgrades too and when I get the timing cover, I will put the engine and radiator in.
Anyone recommend a radiator that fits well in a 66 Coupe? I have power steering, power brakes and A/C in the coupe which I intend to keep.

Did you keep the serpentine belt with your install which would run a reverse direction water pump? If so, do you have a part number for the timing cover and pump?
Thanks for the help.

Lots of guys on here rave about the Champion radiators. When its upgrade time I think I'll be going that route.

They have had great reviews. Other than the looks of the squared off top tank mine works real good.

Mines a stock 1990 fox 5.0 with original serp set up. I gave you the LMR link so, take a look, search for timing chain cover for foxbody

See tips and how to page for 24” radiator and shroud install. If you are going to spend bucks for a new rad, why not go for 24”. You can buy one that looks stock in a 66.

I much prefer the look of a stock 67-70 24” radiator.

Bullet Bob had me thinking today as I know that the new pump that I fitted had a backing plate on it. I think I saw on Jegs or Summit that some of those pumps can run in either direction which would mean that I just need to find a serpentine pulley and I would be good to go. The timing cover fitted is the one for a fox body mustang with the dipstick hole in it so I may just have to find the right pump pulley combo.
Thanks for the continued info and pictures.
