Best Late model Brake Upgrade from Mustang Steve

Looking to upgrade to front discs - I see Steve has several different options for brake kits.  Is there anything cheaper/easier/better to choose of the 94-04, 05-14, and 15+ disc brake setups?  Installing on a 64.5 v8 coupe.  Thanks!

Re: Best Late model Brake Upgrade from Mustang Steve

The easiest front disc brake kit for a '64.5 is the original Kelsey Hayes style system that is now reproduced. And it will fit inside the 14" wheels.

Re: Best Late model Brake Upgrade from Mustang Steve

I used the Cobra brakes on my 64.5 vert. They require 17" wheels, but I was fine with that...some people aren't.

Re: Best Late model Brake Upgrade from Mustang Steve

I’ve got ‘08 GT on the front of my 66 using the MS brackets, ‘17 GT on the rear. I like the MS stuff because it uses readily available Ford parts.

Re: Best Late model Brake Upgrade from Mustang Steve

Was already running 18” wheels.
So I went with 2016 brakes front and rear.

I did contemplate the other choices as well.
I was comparing used/rebuilt components to build my system.
At the time, it was cheaper for me to go with the 2016 brakes and the MS brackets than any other combo.

Some of the 03 Cobra stuff that required rebuilding cost as much as gold...or so it seemed.
Don’t think you can go wrong with any of them.
Just have to decide what size wheels you are going to run.

Also traction rating of tires was another factor to consider as well as the limited choices and prices on the smaller tires and wheels.

Yeah, I put some thought to my madness.😂
Have fun!

What size wheels do you intend to install?

Re: Best Late model Brake Upgrade from Mustang Steve

I have the 2005-2010 brakes on my 68, and like all the other MS parts I have they fit and perform great.

But just a heads up, it’s not just a matter of grabbing a set of 17” wheels, you have to pay attention to the backspacing of the wheel and the caliper spacing. Some spoke designs won’t clear the caliper without a spacer which I am not a fan of. The 66 front wheel well is a little tighter than my 68. I have 17x8 in the front and nothing  rubs but if I were to do it again I think I would go with 17x7 up front.

Just do your homework, nothing worse than installing a brand new set of wheels and tires just to find out they rub somewhere.

I tell people all the time to figure out what the biggest tire size will fit without rubbing absolutely anywhere and then go with one size smaller and then drive the crap out of it and enjoy it. A tire that rubs anywhere at anytime isn’t worth the headache, this is experience talking.

Good luck

Re: Best Late model Brake Upgrade from Mustang Steve

Thanks guys!  I'm planning to run 18" Coys C5s. Not sure on the width, I'll have to measure them - either 7 or 8".
