SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

WHAT ARE YALL RUNNING ON YOUR 64-66 MUSTANGS?

I CURRENTLY HAVE 2005 FACTORY WHEELS SOME CALL THEM HALDIBRAND COPIES THEY ARE 16X7 I THINK. I HAVE TO RUN 1.25 INCH BOLT ON SPACERS AND RUNNING A 215/55/ZR16 ON FRONT AND A 225/55/ZR16 ON REAR.

PLAN IS TO STAY WITH A 16X7 OR 16X8  MAYBE SOME HALDIBRAND OR TORQUE THRUST WITH BLACK CENTER.

QUESTION IS WHAT BACK SPACING?
I HAVE HEARD 4,5 OR 5.0

Re: SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

I'm running  steel 16x7's with 215x55-16 tires in front. 225X55-16 in back.  Wheels have 4.25bs.  Brakes are 12.19 4 piston Wilwoods.  I have about  1/16" clearance between the rim and the edge of the caliper.  I barely made it.  Fender edges are bent up for final clearance.  But I also have 1" lowered GT springs.

With 17's you can go to 4.5bs.  1.25 spacers are a lot, maybe too much.

I also have a set of 87 Lincoln Mk VII aluminum wheels that I have used on occasion.  16x7" w 5"bs.  I can get them to fit with a 1/2" + 1/16" spacer.

Re: SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

I would strongly consider going to 17", only because there is a much bigger tire availability and at better prices. Plus if you ever decided to make any brake changes you would be set.

Re: SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

I like the  "old-skool look" of 15's or 16's............17's make the 65-66's look like Hot Wheel Cars of the 80's IMHO
Too much rim and not enough tarz. 16's are just about perfect look.
Do-it-stop-good?.........Do you need to stop-gooder?
I've seen how you drive .....you don't tailgate......you watch for the texting-idiots....you don't drive excessive speeds (you're a cop for godsake!!)
My opinion..........

Sally,  I'm with you on that..15/16's look much better than 17's IMHO.  17's do not have enough sidewall.  the proportions are off.  I know that much of the hot rod world wants bigger and bigger wheels.  and those 45 aspect ratio tires are much rougher on the ride - not enough side wall for extra spring.

Re: SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

I agree that the 65-66 (All classic Mustangs) look better with 15's, I love the look of Magnum 500's and BFG T/A's letters out. I just find it harder and harder to find decent tires that look good for a decent price in the 15's and 16's. The options are endless in the 17's. With all that said if 15's would fit over my brakes, I would still have them and just pay the insane price for the BFG's.
We all love seeing new wheel set-ups, so let know what you pick with photos.
Good Luck

Re: SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

To get the same fit as you have, measure the backspacing on your existing wheels.  Subtract 1.25” from that, which is your spacer thickness, and the result is the backspacing for the new wheels, assuming width is same.

Re: SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

SO IS THE 16X7 WITH 4.25 OR 4.50 WHAT I NEED FOR FRONT
AND 16X8 WITH 4.25 OR 4.50 BACK SPACE FOR REAR?

SEEMS YOU HAVE THE SET UP I AM WANTING TO RUN ,,,,EVEN SAME SIZE TIRES. YOU SAY YOU HAVE 4.25 BACK SPACE AND BARELY MADE IT WOULD IT BE BETTER TO GET 4.50 BACK SPACE. ALSO DO I NEED TO GET 16X7 FOR FRONT AND BACK OR CAN I RUN A 16X8 WITH 4.50 BACK SPACE ON BACK WITH THAT 225X55X16 TIRE?    PLANNING ON THE BULLET TYPE WHEELS AT THE MOMENT WITH BLACK CENTERS.

Re: SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

First - You can run a 16x8 in the rear.  There is plenty of room, mostly in the inside.  I would go with 4.75 bs in the rear, but you have to try it out first.  Someone else here may be able to help you as I am running 7" rears.

As to the front - I have Wilwood 12.19" dual piston calipers in the front.  The wheels are steel.  4.25bs and absolutely no room for less.  I also have the Arning drop, rolled lips, and 1" lower GT springs from Mustangs Plus.

Assuming you have disk brakes, anything smaller than mine will fit just fine.

Re: SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

OK NOW I CANT FIND ANYBODY THAT SELLS ANY 16X7 WITH 4.25 BACK SPACING TORQUE THRUST WHEELS OR 16X8 WITH 4.50 BACK SPACING. ….I WOULD PROBALY SETTLE FOR SOME 16X7 WITH 4.25 ALL AROUND ….JUST KINDA WANTED THE 16X8 ON REARWITH FOR MY 225X55X16 TIRES.

YALL GIVE ME SOME SOURCES OF WHEELS WITH THESE SPECS....I MAY HAVE TO GO WITH A DIFFERNT STYLE BUT I WANNA STAY WITH THE 16'S

Re: SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

Billy, 8" wheels might be too wide for a 225 tire. I'm running 225/60/15 on 15x7 styled steel wheels on the rear of my 66 coupe and they are just right.

Good, fast or cheap. Pick any two...

Re: SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

Re: SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

PROBALY WOULD RIDE BETTER WITH SAME WHEEL SIZE ALL AROUND...I WONDER IF A 225/55/16 WOULD FIT FRONT TOO....I CURRENTLY HAVE 215/55/16 ZR ON FRONT AND 22/55/16 ZR ON REAR....I GUESS I COULD TRY THEM ON THE RIMS AND PUT THE ON THE FRONT WHEN I GET THEM ….WOULD BE AWESOME TO BE ABLE TO ROTATE THEM  IF I HAD THE SAME TIRES ALL AROUND,,,,SO I THINK I WILL SHOOT FOR 16X7 WITH 4.25 BACK SPACE WEELS AND THEN SEE WHAT TIRE FITS BETTER WHEN TIME FOR NEW TIRES...I JUST BOUGHT 2 NEW TIRES FOR FRONT BECAUSE OF THE SHIMS FALLING OUT OF PASSENGER SIDE AND WORE OUT THE PASSENGER FRONT TIRE AND DRIVER SIDE WAS NOT AS BAD .BUT AFTER GETTEING THE FRONT END BACK TO WHERE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE TIRES RIDE RUFF AND I FEEL A VIBRATION IN STEERING WHEEL.

Re: SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

Legendary Wheels are available with 4.25 BS in a 7" wheel.
I need to find out if they clear Cobra calipers though.

Re: SHOPPING FOR SOME NEW RIMS

Running American TTD's, 15x7, 3.75" BS.  Tires are BF Goodrich, 225/60s.  Had to roll the front fender lips a bit for clearance.  Used Eastwoods "Fender Finisher" to accomplish.  I'll note that while I didn't need to, I tried to use this tool on the rear, but couldn't bend it at all.  These are much thicker, and maybe I'm just not strong enough.
Future project may go to 17x7 wheels, with 4.25" BS with 225/50 series tires as the tire OD is almost identical to the 225/60s. I feel the 17" size offers more tire selections.

65 Fastback, 351W, 5-speed, 4 wheel discs, 9" rear,  R&C Front End.
