    shifter handle/linkage/cable 4R70w

    Hey Guys,
    66 coupe, 4R70W tranny.  
    What are you guys using for shifter handles/cable/linkage for working with a 4R70W Transmission with baumen quick 4 controller?  Are you retrofitting the existing handle/shifter, or running an aftermarket shifter/handle/cables, paddle shift or other?  looking for any ideas......

    Funny you should ax, Rusty.  Just yesterday i started assessing just what I'm going to do for a shifter on the new 4R70W.  Been running a modified stock C4 shifter on the AOD but the 4R70W requires something different.  I know Corky (Tubo) and others are using a cable setup from a late model but that really doesn't appeal to me.  After mush wailing and gnashing of teeth I decided to stay stockish.
    I think I can wire the stock handle and "T" to accommodate the momentary button for OD control and with just a bit of welding I can add a gate-lock to stop the lever in "D".  I've already modified  the arm to match travel on the AOD selector and the 4R may be close...or I'll mod it some more.

    I'm waiting for some new parts from NPD and there are about six other things in line ahead of the shifter butt (TS&T), I'll post pix as I get into this.

    The lever on the box points downward because the range sensor stops you from pointing it upwards.
    There is a guy named Joe Persad, who has developed a bracket to relocate the range sensor so that the lever can point upwards, and a rod to connect to the C4 shifter ... it seemed flimsy to me.
    Generally, the lever has to point down for a cable shift, and up for a rod shift. Lokar make a lever that should allow you to point it upwards.

    I originally installed the late model cable, but didn't like the 5' length, wasn't happy with where I had loop the extra cable, but it shifted well.
    I then tried to come up with a rod shift with the lever pointing down, which involved making a bellcrank with a 1:1 ratio

    Actually Barry, the Explorer box has a lever pointing up.  I know this as I was given an Exp. trans by a friend and had to tear it down for the case.   The case on the trans you looked at here a couple of years ago was bad...spun case bushing at the output shaft...so I tore down the Exp. box for the case.  Discovered the up pointing lever and plan to use that in the Heap.

    Also, the shaft/lever from the 03 Mustang box is two-piece and I think it would be possible to turn the lever 180 on the shaft so it would be uppity but haven't tried.

    I flipped the lever in my AOD, while it was mounted in the car, cuz I'd forgotten when it was out.

    I took a shifter from a 94 Mustang and the shift cable and lower mount plate (in the tunnel of a 98 Mustang) with a 4R70W attached to a V6 Mustang. I modified the lower mount plate and mounted the cable to the bracket on the 4R70W trans I had. It works, but I couldn't get the bezel to fit, so I installed a fabric boot over the shifter. I just have to feel the detents when shifting. I used the support brackets that came with the cable.
