Removing Door Striker on 66 Mustang

What is the best way to remove Door Striker on 66 mustang. I do not think they have ever been removed.
What type of Phillips bit will fit the screws?  Car is in Primer and I have a MAP Gas Torch only.

Re: Removing Door Striker on 66 Mustang

I have soaked them thoroughly with PB Blaster, and used a hand impact driver to remove the screws.  That is the hand tool that comes with several bits, and I used the largest phillips bit.  You set it for "loosen" and beat the end of the tool with a hammer.

Re: Removing Door Striker on 66 Mustang

Philips PH4 is the size you need. They can be had in 5/16” - 3/8” hex or with a 3/8” drive.
Try NOT to use an impact driver as you will more than likely dent the sheet metal the striker is mounted to if you get carried away with the hammer.
Years ago I picked up a Craftsman #4 Philips screw driver with a 3/8” hex shank, I put a 3/8” box wrench on it to get enough leverage to break the screws loose. A liberal use of penetrating oil will also help.
I never reuse the Philips screws but replace them with Allen head industrial grade stainless steel flat socket head cap screws, if you want to keep o/e that won’t work you’ll have to stay with what you have now.
Good luck!

Re: Removing Door Striker on 66 Mustang

In aviation, I have used an  Apex bit (2,3,or 4) with an Apex bit to 3/8' adapter socket on a 3/8" drive speed handle. Also dip the bit in valve grinding compound so it will grip the screw head better. Short of that not working, I use a "screw buster" or Lester tool in a rivet gun to get out the really stubborn screws. And if that fails, a drill and Easy Out.  Pre -soaking with a good penetrating oil also helps.

Re: Removing Door Striker on 66 Mustang

i used #3 phillips bit and butterfly pneumatic impact wrench.  push HARD to hold the bit in the screw.  They will come right out.
