Re: New Tremec TKX

I think I'll set up a "Go Fund Me" page and order one.

Re: New Tremec TKX

Been a long time and there was a lot of conjecture on the TKX, so I thought I'd update with some new info I now have.  I ran up to Hanlon Motorsports yesterday because I needed some parts to fix a T5 and couldn't wait for shipping.  First, that operation has really grown.  They have a ton of stuff in stock, so if you need parts for your T5, TKO, or any Tremec trans I would give them a shout.  They also have twice the staff they did 20 years ago.

Second, I picked Bob Hanlon's brain a bit about the various newer transmissions and talked specifically about the TKX.  He had a stack of them ready to go out the door.  He said its a great trans.  The only downside is going to be cost ($2800 +/-), plus you need a bellhousing.  If you're going from a 10 spline input shaft you're also going to need a clutch, because they are 26 spline only.  Given his endorsement I wouldn't hesitate to run one.

Lastly, an interesting idea came out of the discussion vis a vis cost.  Another option is the Tremec 3650, which is a later model factory Mustang trans.  They can be installed with an adapter plate for a classic swap.  They are also very strong without needing anything done to them.  He said, in a street car under 550HP its good to run as is.  If you have traction or are racing swap the input shaft for a 26 spline.  Now, you can find a 3650 for about $1,000 rebuilt.  The adapter plate runs about $450.  It sure seems like a lot of trans for that kind of cash outlay.  Tremec finally got smart with their factory designs.  These things have bigger gears than any other Tremec I've ever seen apart, including the T56.  The parts look like something you'd find in a heavy truck transmission.  So there's another option for those contemplating a swap and wanting strength.  The only issue may be tunnel interference, but you're going to have that issue with most any trans larger than a T5, and I can't say for certain if there's an issue on that front or not, just that the 3650 strikes me as a pretty stout design.  Still, I think I can do a LOT of tunnel surgery for the nearly $2,000 cost difference vs. the TKX.

What cars came stock with a 3650 transmission?

Re: New Tremec TKX

It replaced the T45 in mid '01 in the Mustang GT.  Ran until '04, then switched to a remote shifter in '05, and ran until '10.  The '01-'04 is the one you want for a swap.

I did forget to mention that one drawback to the 3650 is they are electronic speedo only.
