So what kind of mileage are you guy's getting from a 289-302 4brl automatic?  Trying to decide if I'm going to switch to a v8.

Re: Mileage

Well, for gas mileage, I've got the worst cam, rearend ratio and driving habits you can have. But, when measured in smiles per miles, I have a lot of fun. As in all things in life, it's whatever floats your boat.

Re: Mileage

My 351W with a T5 overdrive trans and 3.70 rear gears got 24 MPG on a 1,000+ mile trip.

The overdrive tranny is key to making the car liveable on the highway.  You CAN get good gas mileage if you set things up correctly.

Re: Mileage

My stock 289 in my 67 got 17/18 mpg. I added headers, dual exhaust, electronic ignition, an Edelbrock manifold and Holley 4 barrel. That dropped my milage to about 14. But it did run much, much better. After some overheating problems I ended up with an aluminum radiator and a 192 thermostat. It runs at 190 all the time now and my milage went back to 17. I'm running a C4 and 3.00 rear end.

It's easier to add horsepower than it is to lose weight.

Re: Mileage

347 stroker w/ Holley 650 double pumper, C4 and 3.40 rear - mileage not to good at approx 12 mpg.  I know that there are some tuning issues that would help improve that number and I will pursue those as soon as I can get around to it.  Until then, it looks like it's a local show car only.  Put a new 180 thermostat and it warms up faster so we'll see what that does for me.

Re: Mileage

65 HT, stock 5.0, EFI, AOD, 3.55.....22 to 24 depending on terrain and cruising speed.  Following Glen B across Wyoming at 85mph dropped it down a bit.

Last year Corky drove his FB and we had his 71(72?, 73?) Vert with carbed 5.0, AFR heads and a bit of cam...the vert got 20 and I think the FB with 331 and lots of cam did too.  We were running  70-75 all the way from Ft. Walton Beach to Tomball.
