Or something like that. I'm making progress adding a third pedal to my 69, but not today. This is what happens when you rely on a faulty memory. I was so sure I had a 157 tooth flexplate for the FMX and AOD I'd have bet $100 on it. So sure I didn't bother to count the teeth. So naturally I buy a 157t flywheel, bellhousing and clutch. The pic below is the result of me relying on my memory, or lack thereof.
Where'd the holes go? It appears the block plate doesn't match up to my 157t bellhousing. So I counted the teeth on the old flexplate and get 164 teeth. Damn. Drove down to Castaic and picked up a 157 tooth block plate from Paul at Mustang MD today and will hopefully put the tranny back in tomorrow. I'm getting much better at this. St least I bought a tranny jack before this swap.

Practice makes perfect Bob.....keep plugging away at it.

I ended up putting my T-5 in twice. I had to remove it to add a spacer under the stud for the fork. What shifter are you planning to use BB2? I am installing a Pro 5 right now. Unfortunately, we now have snow and salt so the test drive will have to wait for a while. I should have it finished up today.

John I'd like to get to the practice makes average level. On one of my auto installs I forgot to put the plate in.
Bob I'm using a Hurst Comp Plus shifter a bought used. Tore it down to rebuild and other than needing a cleaning it was pristine.
Toploader stuff is way more expensive today than when I did my first and only one back circa 1977. Yikes, don't know why I thought they'd be cheaper than an auto.

I just hate it when that happens!

^^^^^^^
My thoughts exactly. I wish I could say I have never done something like that, but.....

No sweat Bob, after you take it out four times the fifth is real easy. Ask me how I know.

No visual difference. I can see how I missed it. That would be sarcasm. I hand carried both flexplate and flywheel into the machine shop for them to balance the fw to the fp and didn't notice a difference. Well, maybe the weight difference. Sheesh.

You ain't alone, Brother BB2. I have the shift linkage for the 4r70w all fingered out. Works great...except it won't go into 1st gear selection because the shift arm on the shifter hits the VSS. Re-engineer time! What's another day or two, I'm retard...ah, that's retired.

I tried to use a 157t plate & bell on a Cleveland while it was on engine test stand. The wider pan rail gets in the way and maybe the same for 351W, but I didn't know that.
We learn so much by our mistakes

You going to run a Z bar?
Offline
Good question butt.........bad situation!
Just how much LIGHTER IS the 157 compared to the 164 tooth 'wheel?
You mighta picked up some uhhhhhh...rev'ability?!! (maybe that will make you "feeeeel better"!!!

Oh boy, somebody had to bring it up. Um...well...no. I rerouted my header tubes which eliminated the space for the a bar. I did a bunch of work tying to use a cable but nixed that method. If I'd have access to a stripped 69 firewall I might have been successful, but with limited working space and fire in my back it didn't happen.
Now after telling you this I don't want to hear any leakage stories cuz I've heard them all talking with other members here I'm using a Tilton hydraulic release bearing. Oh the horror. Ya, we'll see how it works out.
Offline
Well, if it ever leaks, you're well versed in transmission removal. My bet is it'll be fine.
Offline
You make that look easy.
Does the modified header allow better access to bolts?
Are there 157 and 164 bell housings for that transmission?

You got that right Josh, and I'm hoping you're right on the second item.
Yes and yes Dan. I had to spread the collectors for the AOD, so there's plenty of room now. Different bellhousing and starter for the number of teeth on fw and fp.

Well... the saga continues. Cleaned up the new correct block plate, removed the clutch and flywheel and block plate. The following day I reinstalled the flywheel and clutch. I also had to clearance the tranny crossmember to clear the shifter rods. While looking at the below pic I noticed something.
Yep, no block plate. True sorry. Hopefully my misery makes yours seem small. At least I have a Mustang which I'm able to make mistakes on.

Lefty, loosey....then do it over again....

If I could only say I have never done that.

Doh! If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.... No problem - after all you are in the R&D process, right? Just call it research.
Offline
Didn't you do that on your last swap?? Maybe when you put a 6 speed in, you'll remember.
You're startin' ta run outta boxes to swap in.

I hate your memory Barry. And no, I've got a second AOD and a 4R70W.

Look at bright side.
At least you caught it before installing your starter.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
