Pilot bushing instead of a bearing? Your thoughts on both please.

I read more complaints online about the bearings than the bushings. None of the bushings my family had growing up had any issues. What are your thoughts?

I have always replace bushings with bearings without any problems. My 86 ragtop had a bearing as delivered by Ford and was still good after 200K miles. The 67 has had a bearing in it since 1993 and seems to be still going strong after 70K, I can't say the same for the throwout bearing though. I really don't know which is better. My F-250 uses a roller bearing instead of a needle bearing and the clutch kit came with a bushing. I installed a Fomoco bearing instead of the bushing.
I guess bushings work, needle bearings work too. You seem to change trannies on a yearly basis so me thinks either will be good. (A little ribbing in the last sentence, Bwahahaha)

Merry Christmas to you!

Gary

Re: Measure twice, cut once.

The answer is what Ford did.  At some point they stopped using bushings and went to bearings.  A bearing is more expensive than a bushing, therefore one can only surmise that it was done to alleviate warranty claims or shop visits due to noise caused by a worn bushing.  I've yet to have a manual trans Ford vehicle with a bad bearing.  I've always just replaced the bearing when doing a clutch job, but the bearings that came out never looked bad; I just viewed it as cheap insurance.
