4 speed to T-5 swap 67 mustang 351w, boot and shift lever question

I figured some one would know this, I was thinking of the T-5 swap, I wanted to get a repro gear shift lever and knob
67 look or style, that bolts onto the T-5 stub linkage that comes out of the T-5. If I get this setup would I be able to use
the 67 boot and chrome trim plate that fits on the boot (no console)? I thought it should work ,BUT that doesn't mean
it will. I have to make up my mind by the end of Dec., if I'm going to do this. I will probably take the advise on running
the 325 rear gears, and see how 5th gear works out. If not happy I can put a 350 posi in.
as alway's best site for info and knowledge THANKS  mustang stu

Re: 4 speed to T-5 swap 67 mustang 351w, boot and shift lever question

I use the stock boot in my 67. A royal pain in the arse to install. So I popped of the fake reverse lockout and slid it over the top. That was a royal pain also as the set screw in the shifter is has locktite and requires heat to undo. There is also a small fitting inside the handle that locks the T into position. I managed to push it down past the T into the hollow shift lever and had to turn a new one on the lathe.

Re: 4 speed to T-5 swap 67 mustang 351w, boot and shift lever question

When I put a T5 in my 65, I used the stock T5 shifter.  I cut the T5 handle down low, and welded the cut down original handle from a 66 3 speed shifter.  I did this for 2 reasons: 1) It keeps the vibration isolators from the OEM T5 shifter. and 2) by using the OEM T5 shifter, I could avoid cutting the shifter hole in the floor.  The 65 is one of those cars I couldn't think of cutting up.  I used a stock shifter boot, and it fit ok in my console.

The OEM T5 shifter was way better than the original 4 speed shifter from the T10, but not near as nice as a Pro 5.0 shifter.  If you need precise shifting, and money is no object, buy the Pro 5.0 shifter, and one of the T5 swap handles like Modern Driveline sells

Re: 4 speed to T-5 swap 67 mustang 351w, boot and shift lever question

If you use all stock stuff the stock stuff will work.  If you use a real shifter you're going to have to cut the floor pan.  I cut a hole big enough to allow me to get the shifter on and off if needed.  I used a Fox lower boot without the metal ring to seal the hole, then made a stainless ring and used a Fox upper boot.  I used the '67 look shift stalk.  All of this for me is meant to be temporary.  Eventually I'm going to build a console and relocate my shifter to a more advantageous position for a shorter throw and better positioning of the ball to where its under where my right hand falls naturally.

Re: 4 speed to T-5 swap 67 mustang 351w, boot and shift lever question

When I did mine I was also doing the MII front end which required new motor mounts so I bolted everything to the engine and put In car with shifter through hole where I wanted it and then welded in the motor mounts.

Re: 4 speed to T-5 swap 67 mustang 351w, boot and shift lever question

I have one of the look-a-like 67 shifters with the non functioning reverse lock out grad handles bolted to the TKO 600 that was configured to have the shifter come up in the original hole without any modifications. The 67 shift boot slide up from the bottom without issue and bolted down with the metal ring.

I always wanted the look of the lock out shifter...... no that I have it, I'm not so sure. Those lock out handles seemed to scratch me any time I was moving my hand around the shifter. They are now covered in vacuum tubing.
