Starter

The 27 year old reman starter in the Mustang started slowly dying last summer so replacement time is here. I pulled the starter today and dismantled it to see what was wrong. The brushes are toast and the communicator is worn large time plus there was a lot of insulation type crap laying in the nose cone. 

The car has a 94 T5 with late 80's bell. The flywheel is stock 1967 vintage and uses the 3/4 offset (according to PowerMaster) which is what the old one is. 9 teeth on the drive pinion. 

Will this starter from our friends at Rock Auto work?

The starter in the photo is correct for a 157 tooth flywheel.The drive gear on a 164 tooth flywheel starter would barely be visible in that photo.

I think I have the same starter sitting on a shelf. It is brand new except it needs a new  case.  I had some interference with my aftermarket block when I went to install it and elected to try and grind a little off the starter rather than grind the block and ground too much and wound up grinding through the starter housing.

If your case is good, you could swap the intervals and be good to go.

I am happy to give it to you for the cost of shipping.

I can post a pic later if you are interested.

I agree. if the photo is of the actual starter it will work. I just want to know if anyone has actually used said starter and is the photo correct.

Those old starters way a ton and shipping could cost the same a I can buy a rebuilt one local. Thanks for the offer.

I agree. if the photo is of the actual starter it will work. I just want to know if anyone has actually used said starter and is the photo correct.

Then all you have to do is CALL Rock Auto and ask.

If using a vintage flywheel, the starter must be designed for early manual transmission use.  The gear projection distance must be same as early manual starter projection.
Compare the projection to your old one.  If same, it will work.


Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

It seems to turn the engine over just dandy. It was also easier to install due to the small size.
