A story about Bearing Bob

Once upon a time BB2 installed a manual tranny in his 69.... Oh wait he made me promise I would not tell the story.

Sorry I took so long to reply, my Easter lillies are about to bloom and they needed feeding.

Short story, oh heel no. The mistakes I'm making just keep on coming. I'll tell us some over a beer at the base.

Remind me to never tell Gary about my copper secrets. Loose lips, ya know.

Kinda slow here today, so might add well confess some sins. Does lefty loosey righty tighty apply here?

Crazy thing is it was dead nuts on accurate, and just a bit shaky.

Re: A story about Bearing Bob

Does that cable enter on passenger side of transmission?

Pitch is opposite of c4/t5.

Re: A story about Bearing Bob

Four speed uses different reverse helix gear. But then, you already learned that.

Like I always say... I didn’t learn all this sh(tuff) by doing it right the first time.

Yep, regardless of which side the cable enters the tranny. This OD tranny has the speedo port on thr drivers side but still uses the LH gear.

Go figure....except the SMOD.

So odd trans gears use right hand?
and even gears use left hand?

You don't have cruise control???! And you drive from Bako to Texas  for nice long weekends?!!
Get the cruise set-up Like Bullet Bob and me (mine ain't hooked up just yet!)...and use the sensor 'hickey' for speed instead of the cable!

Even factory sensor uses a gear to produce the pulses.

Right or left hand twist/rotation gears. The yellow gear below is a right hand twist. As far as automatic and manual transmissions, my knowledge is limited to fmx and AOD use right hand twist gears and toploaders use left hand twist.

T5 (5 speed) uses right hand too like C4’s(3 speed).

Hence the question about odd and even number of gears in transmission.
What is required in 6 speeds with mechanical output?

Drive gears that I know of are 6 or 8 tooth. I currently run a 6 tooth. Driven gears are 17, 18, 20, 21 and the non-ford 23. Driven gears come in LH or RH configurations. My driven gear is 17 which is the closest I can get with my 3.55 gearing.

The T5 driven gear engages with the top of the drive gear. I suspect the Top Loader engages with the bottom, hence the difference in direction (LH or RH) That's all I know.

Re: A story about Bearing Bob

On the T5, 7 tooth drive gear is available too.

I switched to 7 tooth drive and 21 tooth speedometer for the 3.73 gears when it was in the 92.

It requires tail housing to be removed to make the change.
Easy to perform.

I got my parts from Late Model Restoration.

On the C4 it is machined into the shaft.

Re: A story about Bearing Bob

AOD and, I believe, C4 are seven tooth.  The 4R70W is 8 tooth and requires me to use a 23 tooth driven gear with the 3.55's

The 4R70W was available with a 7 tooth output shaft also. Using that lets you not have to use the 23 tooth gear ... its not a Ford part, from a Jeep I think. It has a very short life when used in a Ford. The teeth don't mesh correctly.
I probably should'a mentioned it when your box was apart.
I'm gunna use an electric or GPS speedo to avoid the 23 tooth.

Re: A story about Bearing Bob

I ran a 23 toother for a while, a short while as it destroyed itself in short order. Knowing BB, his speedo cable is as smooth as silk and allows the 23 tooth Jeep gear.

Re: A story about Bearing Bob

Thanks guys...yeah, I heard that the 23 tooth doesn't last too long...bought two.  Might have bought that output with the seven tooth speedo gear, Barry, if I had known about it.  We'll see, that may be the incentive to move to that really nice Dakota Digital cluster that Don was bragging about.  So far that's the only aftermarket setup that I really like.

Re: A story about Bearing Bob

Bob, I've got this adapter to fit some Speedhut gauges into the factory bezel. the gauges are very customizable, ya could even put Jean onto them.
