My Neighbours 100% Original 68 289 Coupe RANDOMLY SHUTS OFF---

Hi all, I figured before I try to figure this out Id reach out here to see if there is some solid direction I could get.

Now Ive done almost all on these cars as far as repairing or replacing parts, components, add-ons ect, but for funky stuff like this I like to seek consult in the even someone has encountered it in the past.

So he has owned this car for over 40yrs, Ive worked on it a bunch to keep it road worthy and driving well as have others in the past.  At one point over a decade ago he had a Push start installed for reasons he cant quite remember.  the mechanic friend suggested it and he did it.

So what Happens?  Random Shut Offs and then hard starting......NOTHING ELECTRICAL works BUT, Starter????? this is what confuses me........more than once now he is convinced that moving wires under the dash around the radio and Ignition Switch have "reconnected something" cause the radio will turn back on, interior lights, dash lights, headlight Et Voila the car will start again....

Anyone have a solid direction to start with?

regards,
 Jeff

My guess would be the ignition switch.

I'm siding with TKO on this one. The switch or the connector. You say nothing electrical works, butt how about the headlights? If the headlights and starter work then this leads us back to the ignition switch harness, connector or switch.

Ignition and radio + other accessories, I agree...Ign. switch.  The headlights/dash lights get power directly from the solenoid/battery.  Butt (TS&T), everything gets power through the the firewall connector nearest to the center of the firewall...near the throttle.  By wiggling the harness he may be re-establishing a connection there.  Those connectors are prone to corrosion.

Just thinking some more...the starter may work 'cause the push button starter was wired to a source north of the firewall.

Did original style ignition switch get installed?

Or does he still have push button?

Either way, I would look at the wire splicing under the dash.

What ignition system is on the car? Points or electronic?

BulletBoB I thought the same as you "where the harness marries the underhood at the firewall.......

As for the Rest, Nothing Elec. works but the Starter!
no interior anything, no headlights.....

His fog work cause his dad wired them in 1980 something and  they have a direct feed and dedicated switch......My Concern is the guy who installed the Push button did a bad splicing job and also ran his own wire to the Starter (didnt use the factory harness) but I guess I will see......

would it be safe to say Start with the Ign. Switch, after all it is original to 1968

Had same problem 20 years ago.  IGNITION SWITCH
