I would charge the battery first.

Dwalker, a battery takes several hours to completely charge. Your Battery may be weak from running down several times. I suggest to charge battery overnight at low charge, that should do it. Check charging system, voltage should be 14.2-14.6 volts with charged battery. Battery voltage should stay up to at least 14.0 volts with lights on. That should give you a few hints of your electrical systems condition.

Charge it! Then see if it works okay. If the headlight ckt breaker isn't cliking and all the lights are working okay you will prolly be fine...unless there is some outer issue.
As for the battery, when a battery is very weak the alternater will have a hard time bringing it back up, especially in only ten minutes. So start with a good charge and the alternator should be able to keep it charged.
And when you get it all sorted out and are thrilled with it, we'll talk about the relay headlight mod and BBs "never do a Sal horn relay mod".
Good luck.

The voltages that Howard is suggesting is with a charged battery and with the car running at a fast idle. Good suggestion, Howard. Ps: Are you going to Reno this year?

For what it's worth, I just went through all this with my 90 GT. Got a new battery and all seemed fine but, i had been chasing a parasitic drain. Eventually found the cause but, had to charge the battery which took sometime to accomplish. The handy dandy flute meter confirmed it was fully charged and it further confirmed the alternator was "working".
Be patient and take the time to charge it and you'll be better off in the long run.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
