12.5 brake conversion questions

Help me out with installing the GT2008-FT kit on the front of my 68 mustang.

With the hub and a new 12.5” rotor on, the caliper bracket doesn’t line up over the rotor, it is off the exact width of the
shim that came with the kit, if I leave the shim out, the caliper bracket will bolt on without interference. It also appears that the wheel is spaced out farther than it was with the original rotor/ hub.

The drum brake hubs I am trying to use have an identical offset to the stock 67 rotors that I pulled off. I have the bearing
races fully installed and the rotor sits flat against the face of the hub. I’m assuming that the drum brake hubs aren’t
the correct ones for this conversion. The only ID on them is K/H 076231. I can’t remember what they came off of as
I’ve had them for many years and I did see a previous post about this same issue but there wasn’t a response with an
outcome, just a statement from MS that said: some other fords use a drum brake hub with a little different offset.
Do I need to get a new pair of hubs?

Also, I have 17” Torque Thrust II wheels, will these clear the 12.5 rotors with GT calipers? The description on the MS
website says that they won’t clear the 13.2 rotors but wasn’t sure about the 12.5. Thanks!

Re: 12.5 brake conversion questions

Discsrd the 67 disc brake hubs.
Use drum brake 65-73 hubs. The rotors mount flush against the face of the hubs. The rotor centering rings need to be driven into the hub snout all the way against the flange. The centering rings are same thickness as the rotor center and fit inside the center of the rotor. They simply center the rotor on the hub.

It would help if you would post pics showing what you are doing. You can email them to me steve@mustangsteve.com
Hopefully you have instructions in hand.

The wheel will be in exactly the same position on the car as it was with the original brakes if you have everything assembled per the instructions. This brake setup does not change wheel location.

If you have the wheels, the rotors and the calipers with pads, place the loaded caliper onto the rotor and then place that assembly into the wheel with wheel face down on the floor.  Drop some 1/2” bolts through the rotor into the wheel.  Slide the caliper around the rotor to see if it clears the wheel.

Re: 12.5 brake conversion questions

I don't know what hubs I have, the 67 disk brake hubs are a hub/ rotor assembly, and I understand about the rotor centering rings and I do have the instructions, I just think I have incorrect drum brake hubs.

Re: 12.5 brake conversion questions

Pics will help. I have some hubs if needed.

If it will help, I cam measure the offset on a pair of hubs, but I will have to press them out of the drums first.

Re: 12.5 brake conversion questions

I received the email pics.  Looks like possible wrong hubs.  They have a raised boss under the head of the wheel studs, whereas all I have seen are flat.  The raised bosses look like ones I have seen on boat trailer hubs at Tractor Supply.   Always wondered if those hubs would work...

Re: 12.5 brake conversion questions

Those odd hubs are out there. I've been sold a few of those funky hubs (and no Steve, not by Tractor Supply) which were listed as 65-73 hubs. Apparently one is a disc brake hub, the other is for drum brakes.

Re: 12.5 brake conversion questions

Did the real Shelby’s used a hub with additional material around the studs for strength?

Does it have a slightly longer inboard length on the hub RPM?

Re: 12.5 brake conversion questions

Real Shelby would have been equipped with disc brakes which used a totally different hub.

Thanks for posting the hub pic, Bob. Those look exactly like what he has.

Yes, but over all width of hub is the same.

Re: 12.5 brake conversion questions

I shipped a pair of 67 Mustang drum hubs, new bearing races and grease seals today, so this should have a successful ending.

Re: 12.5 brake conversion questions

Installed the correct hubs from Mustang Steve and everything now lines up.  You can see the difference in the flange offset between the 2 hubs, the correct one is on the right.  Thank you Steve!
