Do they make a double grove HiPo pully. The previous owner put a alternator on my 59 Bird. The way it is installed there is not much room for adjustment. I can't stop it from squealing much above idle. I figured I'd use a HiPo pully, larger diameter. The problem is this alternator is set up with a double pully and uses the outside one. Any ideas?

What about a dual groove gm double groove pulley. I went with that on my 1965 muatang 289. Need to buy a new replacment bottom alternator adjustment bracket to lengthen thevold stock bracket. What engine is in the Bird?

It's a 59 with a 352. Thought about extending the bottom bracket but figured a larger pully may be an easier fix. Is the GM double grove larger? Any piacular year/cars I should look for?

What alternator is on the engine? A low amp alternator should not put up a fuss unless the belt or the pulley is glazed.
I had to go to a double groove pulley but my alternator is a 130 amp. A single belt has to be way too tight and puts too much strain on the water bearing.

They only came in single groove

Walt - just a note about V-Belts ... original belts on my 65 Mustang are 3/8' wide, the mm equivalent sold today is slightly smaller. I had belt slippage and thought the maybe the bottom of the “V” portion of the belt was bottoming out on the pulley. So, I got the equivalent length belt in a ½” belt size, that is also actually a slightly smaller mm size, and I haven’t had belt slippage issues since. Might be worth a try.

Could alternator be spaced out a little to line up? Or maye change the other pulleys ?

Post some pictures of the brackets, how it’s mounted, and the water pump pulley. I have a box of FE pulleys and brackets that I was going to try and sell. I could donate some for the cause and cost of shipping.

I bet Rudi could make one.

Rudi, your probably right about the glazed pully. This is a 2G, probably 60 or 80 amps. I think this has been like this since I got the car. It was slipping so bad, it didn't even squill. I tried to clean the pully on the car yesterday, helped for a little but started squealing again. If I take it off the car to clean it right I'd just like to get a larger pully.

The belt I bought is 13/32. I'll see if I can get this length in 1/2", worth a shot!

The guy that did this conversion looks like he modified the generator bracket. Tried to get some picks, it's mounted to the lower part of the motor and couldn't get a clear shot. I have brackets for a upper mount alternator but they won't work. There is a bolt hole used on the heads that this older FE don't have. If you have a set of alternator brackets made to mount to the lower side of the motor I would be more than happy to purchase them from you.

I have seen two groovers ( izatta word?) on line somewhere, I think on some truck applications.

The 4” diameter is the thing…

What difference can you tell with the hipo pulley?

Made to compensate for higher reving “k” code, smaller pulley over revs the alt.

Walt, I just searched for "three inch, two grove alternator pulley" Got a lot of results. Saw one that is 2 3/4".

I when I was upgrading my alternator I went to my local napa auto parts store to see if they could order me a gm si alternator pully beleive off of buicks. But i lucked out at they had a double groove 5/8" shaft keyed v groove pulley. After measureing the pulley it measured out as the same pulley I wouldve ordered. I lucked out the manager of the store saod since I bought my 3g alternator there he would let me leave my surpentine pulley in exchange. Even with larger pulley I have to extend the lower alternator bracket.

This is making more since to me now….. I’m a little slow sometimes!! The alternator bolt hole in the block didn’t start till 63/64 time frame. I don’t know that any of the brackets I have will help. I will have to find the pics. Here is a link to for a conversion bracket that gets good reviews.

But then it hangs over the edge of the pulley until it wears a groove and can’t seat anymore.
