Possible new project

I have always said that my next project and maybe last build would be a F100 of some vintage. Sort of on the same lines as MS 69 coupe, I know I want a cruiser that looks and sounds good but is built more for the ride and driving than just the thought of performance. Build it for how I drive 95% of the time in lieu of 5%.

The problem has always been time and money like most. Well, I'm running out of time every day I don't get started. My other hurdle is how much do I want to spend on a project vehicle, and plan for this to be about a 2–4-year build.

All the F100's I find are anywhere depending on model and body style $5k-$10k for something that need to be completely broken down and then discover the unknown from there.

Now this is where things get complicated, I have always liked Falcon's but never really thought about a Fairlane (Comet). I have a buddy that bought a 1967 Mercury Comet about 15-20 years ago because it came with a Mercury 410 FE with a 6-pack set-up and Top loader 4-speed that he wanted for a Cougar project.

The Comet is 98% rust free (One spot at the lower lip of the back window), Never wrecked, all original metal plus extra fenders and Cyclone fiberglass hood. one of everything and two of some things, minus motor and trans. I have a standard bore 351w Factory roller motor in the shed, and then I would need a 4R70W.

He told me this weekend that if I wanted to build it, just take it and get it out of his garage. I have no desire to build and sell, I only want to build if my intentions are to keep it. The doors fit better than my Toyota. Now I just have to decide if I want to build this, or if I will regret not diving in deeper financially to build a truck.

The one thing I know is around here I see all kinds and models of trucks, but never a clean Comet.

Re: Possible new project

My thoughts are that motivation is hard enough on projects you are passionate about and want to own.  If its not something like that then even if its free its still not worth it.

If its is something you want to get into then my concern would be parts availability more than anything.  As Mustang guys we are spoiled by the prodigious aftermarket support for our cars.  That's not to say that those parts are all top notch, many aren't, but they exist.  Getting involved in a less popular vehicle restoration/restification can be a lot more challenging just from the parts standpoint.  Seemingly stupid things like little pieces of exterior or interior trim may be made of unobtanium.  I can tell you that finding NOS parts for a popular car that's less than 40 years old is hard enough.  Stretch that out to 60 years and a much lower volume car and its going to be REALLY hard.  So, if you want to get into it I would do a serious inventory of exactly what it needs in terms of interior and exterior trim, then look around and see what's available, and then ponder whether your desire to complete it is going to be enough to get you over those hurdles.

Its a cool car for sure, and could be really neat done up, but there are tons of cars that I think are cool that I know in reality I'll never own.

Re: Possible new project

TKO you hit the nail on the head, We sure are spoiled with mustangs, I looked at a 64 comet that I thought I could use for a parts car for my 64 Fairlane and there wasn't very much that was interchangeable even though they were what I thought basically the same and of course the 64 fairlane was a one off year.

Re: Possible new project

I hear both of you and have had the very same thoughts. I am not as concerned about finding the parts needed, as I am my enthusiasm to stay the course and not lose interest. I need to find someone with a Fairlane or Comet that I can drive to get a feel for it. I am concerned as to how big it will feel going down the road vs a Mustang or Falcon.

The Comet isn't going anywhere, so I'm taking my time thinking through it. Thats why I mentioned it on here, always appreciate the thoughts and comments all of you guys bring to the table.

Re: Possible new project

While I agree with other posts about parts availability; for me, if there isn’t much rust to address, and it hasn’t been hit where you’d need to address sheetmetal or frame issues, I say go for it.
Also, I’m guessing that there is a “Comet Club” that Google can find for you that can provide specific information on the rebuild, and your decision to proceed, or not.

Re: Possible new project

Yea, that’s what I keep coming back too as well, there is one rust spot on the back window lip where water would set, that’s it and NO wrecks or bent metal,

Re: Possible new project

Throw a 351W and tranny in it.......fix the ONE rustspot.....new tires (maybe wheels too) and post it on "Craigs List" or other sites.
Take that $$$ you make and put it toward the F-100 ya want.
RUST FREE......NEVER BUMPED.....ALL THERE..... !!!
Pretty safe bet you'll get plenty of guys wanting to throw money at chew.
